Chapter 6 - The Rumbling in the East Wing

The words hung heavily in the air, sending a sudden, chilling realization through the room. Before the inspector could respond to Elena’s cryptic warning, a deep, resonant rumble vibrated through the floorboards beneath their feet. The municipal office windows rattled violently in their frames, and the low hum of the fluorescent lights flickered and died, plunging the room into a brief, frantic half-darkness before the emergency backup generators kicked in with a dull roar.
Arthur slammed his hands onto the counter, his eyes wide with alarm. "That’s not an earthquake," he shouted over the rising din. "That’s coming from the housing complex!"
Clara rushed to the large glass window facing the street. Through the smudged pane, she could see a thick plume of grey dust rising into the afternoon sky just three blocks away. A massive demolition excavator, its steel bucket gleaming menacingly in the sunlight, was parked directly against the brick facade of the complex's east wing—the very section where the missing property manager’s office had been located.
"They're destroying the evidence!" Clara yelled, turning back to face the officers.
Elena lifted her head, a grim, defiant smile touching her lips despite the handcuffs binding her wrists. "There won't be any ledger left to examine," she said, her voice dripping with cold satisfaction. "By the time anyone gets over there, every single file, every forged deed, and every financial record will be buried under tons of rubble."
The lead inspector cursed under his breath, releasing his grip on Elena’s arm just enough to shove her toward a junior officer. "Secure her in the holding vehicle," he ordered sharply. Then, turning to Arthur and Clara, he shouted, "We need to get over there right now before that excavator finishes the job!"
Toby screamed, terrified by the sudden chaos, and wrapped his arms around his mother's waist as the officers tried to pull her away. "Don't take my mommy! Mommy!" the little boy wailed, his tie-dye t-shirt soaked with tears.
Elena struggled against the officers, her eyes locking onto Clara with a fierce, desperate plea. "Clara, wait! If they tear down that wing, they're going to destroy the safety deposit box! My son's medical fund is inside it—the real one, not the stolen money!"
Clara stopped dead in her tracks, her hand reaching for the brass keys still resting on the counter. She looked at Elena, then down at sobbing little Toby, whose frightened face mirrored the innocence trapped in the middle of a criminal enterprise.
"Why should I believe you?" Clara asked, her voice tight with conflict. "You've lied about everything else."
"Because I stole to pay for his surgeries, not for myself!" Elena screamed as the officers dragged her toward the heavy glass doors. "Check the floor safe under the manager's desk! The combination is Toby’s birthday!"
The ground rumbled again, even harder this time, as another distant crash echoed across the neighborhood, signaling that the demolition of the east wing had just broken through the outer load-bearing wall.
Arthur grabbed the brass keys from the counter, sliding them across the wooden surface toward Clara with intense urgency. "Take them, Clara. If that safe gets crushed, the entire truth about who funded this corruption goes down with it."
May you like
Clara snatched the keys from the counter, turning on her heel to sprint toward the exit. But as she pushed open the glass doors, a masked figure stepped out from the swirling dust storm outside, blocking her path and pointing a heavy black firearm directly at her chest.
