Chapter 2 - The Shadows of the Back Hallway

The metallic crash echoed again, bouncing off the linoleum floors and making everyone in the municipal housing office flinch. Arthur froze, his hand still hovering inches from the brass keys. Clara’s fingers hovered just above the counter, her eyes darting from the sliding keys toward the dark corridor at the back of the building. Elena’s face, which had moments ago been a portrait of aggressive triumph, now twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated terror. The yellow envelope slipped from her white-knuckled grip, scattering a flurry of crumpled utility bills across the dusty floor.
Little Toby dropped his cardboard box, the dull thud drawing a collective gasp from the seated crowd.
"Elena Vance!" a harsh voice barked from the hallway, cutting through the heavy silence like a razor blade. "Step away from the counter and keep your hands where we can see them!"
Two figures in heavy dark jackets stepped out from the shadows of the corridor. Their badges caught the harsh fluorescent glare, gleaming with municipal authority. The crowd of onlookers gasped collectively, leaning back in their chairs as the gravity of the situation shifted violently. This was no longer a simple dispute over rent or neighborhood gossip. The arrival of the inspectors signaled something far deeper, something that threatened to unravel the very foundation of Elena’s carefully constructed life.
Clara slowly pulled her hand back from the keys, her gaze fixed on the approaching officers. She looked at Elena, searching for any trace of the fierce anger that had defined her moments before, but found only a shivering, defeated shell of a woman.
"Is there a problem, officers?" Arthur asked, standing tall behind his laminate desk, his wedding band flashing as he placed both palms flat on the counter.
The lead inspector, a tall man with a severe expression and sharp grey eyes, ignored Arthur for a moment. He walked directly past Clara, his heavy boots clicking rhythmically against the floor, and stopped inches away from Elena. He looked down at the scattered papers at her feet, then slowly raised his gaze to meet hers.
"You filed a fraudulent eviction claim against Ms. Vance," the inspector stated coldly, his voice echoing in the dead silence. "And that is just the beginning of what we found in your unit."
Elena’s lips parted, but no words came out. She took a staggering step backward, her shoulder bumping against her son’s small frame. Toby looked up at his mother with tear-filled eyes, his small voice breaking the heavy air.
"Mommy, what are they talking about?" Toby whispered, trembling.
Before Elena could answer, the inspector reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a worn, leather-bound journal bearing a familiar red ribbon, slamming it down onto the counter next to Clara’s paid receipt.

"We found this hidden under your floorboards," the inspector said, locking his eyes on Elena. "And it proves you’ve been forging signatures for the entire building—including the signature of the man who died in unit four."
