Chapter 5

The wail of distant police sirens cut through the freezing midnight air as two cruisers slammed to a halt outside the rusted iron gates of the municipal railyard. Leo sat in the back of Marcus Vance’s sleek black SUV, his small hands clenched into tight fists against the fabric of his blue hoodie. Clara sat beside him, gently holding his arm, while Marcus drove, his knuckles white against the steering wheel.

They pulled up to the dilapidated freight boxcar parked near the edge of the abandoned tracks. A harsh spotlight from the lead police cruiser bathed the graffiti-covered metal walls in an eerie, stark white glow. Two armed sheriff's deputies stood outside the rusted sliding door, their weapons drawn and pointed downward.

“Step away from the door and identify yourselves!” shouted the senior deputy, his voice echoing off the frozen gravel.

A muffled, ragged cough echoed from inside the dark interior of the boxcar, followed by the sound of shifting wood.

The heavy metal door scraped slowly open, revealing a gaunt, bearded man wearing a grease-stained jacket. He shielded his eyes against the blinding police spotlight, trembling violently.

“Leo? Lily?” the man rasped, his voice cracking with a devastating familiarity.

Leo threw open the SUV door before Clara could stop him, sprinting across the gravel toward the boxcar.

“Dad!” Leo screamed, throwing his arms around the man’s waist.

Marcus Vance stepped out of the SUV, walking slowly toward the light. As the bearded man looked up and caught sight of Marcus’s face, all the blood drained from his cheeks. The resemblance was undeniable—they shared the exact same piercing hazel eyes and sharp jawline.

“Thomas?” Marcus whispered, his voice catching in his throat as twenty years of grief collided with reality. “You... you survived the fire?”

The man—Thomas Vance—clutched Leo tighter, looking at his brother with a mixture of profound terror and heartbreaking resignation.

“I didn't survive it, Marcus. I had to run from it. And now that you’re here... they’re going to find us.”

Before Marcus could take another step forward, the beam of a third vehicle’s headlights swept across the railyard gate, revealing a black unmarked sedan blocking the exit.
