Chapter 13

The breaking news banner across the global broadcast monitor flashed in stark, crimson letters: BREAKING: VIKTOR ARRESTED BY INTERPOL TASK FORCE.

Inside the secure medical bunker, the family froze, watching the live footage as heavily armed Interpol agents escorted the handcuffed cartel leader Viktor out of a dilapidated warehouse near the Canadian border. Viktor kept his head bowed, his dark wool coat stained with mud, refusing to look at the surrounding cameras as he was shoved into the back of an armored transport.

The news anchor’s voiceover echoed through the room.

“Authorities confirm that Viktor’s network collapsed within minutes of the global broadcast, triggered by an anonymous data dump from an encrypted corporate ledger linked to Apex Healthcare...”

Marcus turned off the monitor with a swift tap of his remote, letting out a long, exhausted sigh that seemed to shed years of corporate stress from his shoulders.

“It’s finally over,” Marcus murmured, walking over to pour himself a cup of coffee from the staff station. “The cartel’s leadership is completely dismantled. Their bank accounts have been frozen globally.”

Thomas gently stroked Lily’s hair as the little girl blinked sleepily, her color fully restored thanks to the successful surgery and the expert care she had received.

“Thank you, Marcus,” Thomas said, his voice thick with emotion. “If you hadn't answered that security ping at the hospital... if Leo hadn't spoken up at that desk... none of us would be here today.”

Leo looked down at his blue hoodie, noticing a small tear near the cuff where he had gripped the reception desk so tightly hours ago.

“We just wanted to find work, Dad. We didn't know the whole world was going to help us,” Leo said softly.

Clara smiled warmly, pulling a small stack of official documents from her clipboard and placing them on the bedside table.

“Well, Leo, your wish for work actually came true in a very unexpected way,” Clara said with a wink. “Apex Healthcare just established the Vance Family Foundation for Pediatric Care, and they’ve named you and Lily honorary junior directors for life.”

Leo’s eyes went wide.

“Really? We get to help other sick kids?”

“Every single day,” Marcus confirmed, walking over with a proud grin. “With a fair salary and full medical benefits, just like I promised at the hospital.”

The bunker doors slid open once more, revealing a bright, sunlit courtyard outside where federal restrictions had been lifted, replaced by a peaceful, welcoming morning breeze.

As the family prepared to step out into the sunlight for the first time in three years, Thomas’s phone buzzed with one final, unexpected text message from an unknown number.
