Chapter 14

The morning sun cast a golden, healing glow across the courtyard of the federal facility as Thomas, Marcus, Clara, Leo, and Lily walked out together into the fresh air. Lily wore a brand-new pink hoodie, walking steadily on her own two feet without a trace of pain, while Leo skipped slightly ahead, his messy light brown hair catching the morning breeze.

Suddenly, Thomas’s phone vibrated violently in his pocket. He pulled the device out, frowning slightly at the screen. The message wasn't from the cartel, and it wasn't from the federal authorities.

It was a single audio file from an unlisted, encrypted international number.

Marcus noticed his brother stopping in his tracks, his face suddenly pale.

“What is it, Thomas? Who’s texting you now?” Marcus asked, stepping closer with a protective posture.

Thomas stared at the screen, his thumb hovering hesitantly over the play button.

“I don't know,” Thomas whispered. “It says... 'Listen closely, Thomas. The ledger was only half the story.'”

Clara gently placed a hand on Thomas’s arm.

“Play it. Whatever it is, we face it together now. We have the whole world behind us.”

Thomas took a deep breath and pressed play on the audio file.

A sharp, static hiss filled the morning air, followed by the sound of shuffling paper and the unmistakable voice of an elderly man—a voice Thomas hadn't heard in over a decade.

“Thomas... if you’re hearing this message, it means my testimony finally reached the light of day. But remember my boy... the syndicate wasn't just a criminal enterprise. It was built on a foundation that still reaches into the highest levels of global finance...”

The audio cut off abruptly with a sharp click, leaving an eerie silence hanging over the sunlit courtyard.

Leo looked up at his father, his big hazel eyes full of innocent curiosity.

“Dad? Who was that on the phone? Was that Grandpa?”

Thomas slowly lowered the phone, looking out past the courtyard gates toward the horizon where the city skyline stood tall and proud against the blue sky.

Marcus gripped his brother’s shoulder tightly, a fierce, determined expression settling across his face.

“We finish what our father started,” Marcus said quietly.

As the family turned to take their first step toward a true, permanent home, the camera slowly zoomed in on Thomas’s phone screen as a new, unread notification popped up from an anonymous global network—revealing a secret coordinate that would change their destiny forever.
