Chapter 8: The Overseas Connection

The international video call request flashed silently on the OLED screen, the caller ID displaying a secure encrypted node routed directly through Zurich, Switzerland. Elena stared at the pulsating green icon for three seconds before swiping her thumb to accept the transmission. She didn't bother putting it on speakerphone, holding the device a few inches from her ear while keeping her steady gaze locked onto Teresa, who was still trembling against the marble island.

"Report," Elena said in fluent, flawless German, her voice crisp and commanding.

A deep, synthesized male voice responded instantly through the encrypted channel. "Frau Vance, the primary Swiss ledger has been fully secured. All assets held under the shell corporation 'Vance Holdings International' have been successfully frozen and redirected to the primary trust account."

"Was there any resistance from the local signatories?" Elena asked, shifting her weight slightly as she took another calm sip of water.

"None. The primary signatory attempted to execute a manual wire transfer to an unverified Cayman Islands account approximately six minutes ago, which triggered our automated red-flag protocol. The transaction was blocked, and local authorities in Zurich have already detained the secondary recipient."

Teresa watched Elena converse fluently in a foreign language, her eyes wide with a terrifying suspicion. She couldn't understand the words, but the clinical authority in Elena's tone signaled a level of power that went far beyond a disgruntled wife seeking revenge.

"Who are you talking to?" Teresa demanded, her voice cracking with suppressed hysteria. "Who is on that phone? Is that one of your lawyers? What did they just say about Zurich?"

Elena ended the call with a single tap of her thumb and lowered the phone. She looked at her mother-in-law with a gaze so devoid of warmth that it felt sub-zero.

"That was the senior managing director of the Swiss asset recovery division," Elena answered smoothly in English. "The same division that has been tracking the missing pension funds from my father’s company since two thousand six."

Teresa staggered backward, her hip bumping hard against the edge of the kitchen stool. "Your father... your father was just a local civil engineer. He died broke when his firm went under!"

"My father built civil infrastructure projects across three continents," Elena corrected, her voice dropping to a harsh, resonant whisper. "Until your late husband’s corporate syndicate systematically engineered a hostile bankruptcy, stole his patents, forged his signature on fraudulent debt documents, and drove him to a massive heart attack at the age of fifty-two."

The temperature in the bright, modern kitchen seemed to drop ten degrees. Teresa stared at Elena as if she were looking at a ghost returned from the grave.

"You... you’re not just an auditor," Teresa whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the refrigerator. "You’re Robert Miller’s daughter."

May you like

"I am Robert Miller’s only child," Elena confirmed, stepping forward until she stood mere inches from the older woman. "And I spent the last fifteen years of my life earning degrees in corporate law, forensic accounting, and international financial compliance for one specific purpose: to walk through this exact front door and legally dismantle every single luxury your family stole from mine."

Before Teresa could formulate a response, the heavy front door swung open again without a knock, and a tall, imposing man in a tailored grey suit stepped into the foyer, holding a manila folder stamped with a federal seal.
