Chapter 10: The Arrival of the Protector

The black sedan door slammed shut with a heavy, satisfying thud that echoed across the expansive stone courtyard. Through the floor-to-ceiling glass of the front entryway, Elena watched as Marcus Vance adjusted his bespoke charcoal suit jacket, smoothed back his slicked-dark hair, and strode toward the front porch with the confident, untouchable swagger of a man who believed the law was something other people had to follow. Marcus wasn't just a corporate attorney; he was the primary legal shield for the entire Vance syndicate, a high-ranking federal prosecutor who used his position inside the Department of Justice to quietly quash subpoenas and lose incriminating case files before they ever reached a grand jury.

The heavy front door was still unlocked, left ajar by the federal agents who had escorted David away. Marcus pushed it open without knocking, his expression set in a mask of stern, authoritative displeasure.

"What in God's name is going on here?" Marcus barked, his voice echoing off the high vaulted ceilings of the foyer. "Mother? David? Why are there federal transport trucks in the driveway? I received an automated alert that my brother's corporate card was flagged, which is an administrative impossibility given that I personally cleared his division's audit trail last month."

Marcus stepped fully into the hallway, stopping dead in his tracks when he saw Teresa crumpled on the kitchen floor, sobbing uncontrollably, and the grey-suited federal agent standing quietly beside the quartz island. Finally, his eyes landed on Elena, who stood calmly by the console table with her designer handbag slung over her arm.

"Elena?" Marcus narrowed his eyes, a flicker of irritation crossing his handsome face. "Why are you still here playing domestic victim? Where is David? I demand an explanation right now. As a federal prosecutor, I have the authority to—"

"You have the authority to pack up your briefcase and leave before you’re implicated in obstruction of justice," Elena interrupted, her voice entirely level.

Marcus let out a sharp, condescending laugh, stepping forward as if he were addressing a hostile witness in a courtroom. "You must have lost your mind, Elena. You're a junior forensic auditor playing in a league you don't understand. Who authorized these vehicles? Who let these men onto private property?"

The grey-suited federal agent stepped out from the kitchen, holding his gold badge open and displaying it directly at eye level. "Agent Miller, federal receivership division. Marcus Vance, you’re currently standing on property seized under federal warrant 44-B. I suggest you lower your tone."

Marcus stared at the badge, his confident smirk faltering for a fraction of a second before he quickly recovered his composure. He sneered, looking between the agent and Elena with deep disdain. "This is a jurisdictional error. My office oversees federal asset forfeiture for this entire judicial district. No warrant can be executed on this property without my direct signature and authorization."

"Your signature was revoked by the Attorney General’s internal ethics committee at 8:14 this morning, Marcus," Elena said smoothly, pulling a crisp, printed memo from her handbag. "Along with your access codes, your security clearance, and your active bar association credentials."

Marcus froze. The blood drained from his face so fast his skin turned a sickly, pale grey. He snatched the paper from Elena’s hand, his eyes scanning the dense legal text at blinding speed. The seal at the top of the page wasn't a standard district stamp; it was the red insignia of the federal Office of Professional Responsibility, citing conspiracy, wire fraud, and systematic corruption of judicial proceedings.

"This... this is fabricated," Marcus whispered, his voice trembling as the reality of his own professional execution finally set in. "I’m a federal prosecutor. I have immunity."

May you like

"Immunity doesn't cover treason against the judicial system, Marcus," Elena replied softly. "Especially when you left a digital paper trail spanning twelve years, routing kickbacks from your family’s shell companies directly into offshore accounts registered under your mother’s maiden name."

Marcus stared at the document, then slowly raised his terrified eyes to look at Elena. But before he could utter another word, the sharp wail of police sirens pierced the morning air, growing louder by the second as multiple black-and-white cruisers turned sharply onto the private driveway.
