Chapter 4: The Corporate Guillotine

The vibration of David’s smartphone sounded like a rattlesnake trapped in a tin can. He slowly reached his trembling hand into his pocket, pulling out the sleek black device. The screen was illuminated by a flashing crimson banner that spanned the entire width of the display. It wasn't just a standard email notification; it was an override command from the corporate server at Vantage Global.

"Read it out loud, David," Elena instructed gently, her posture relaxed yet vigilant. "Or would you prefer I read it for you? I received the carbon copy about thirty seconds before the doorbell rang."

Teresa grabbed David’s arm, her fingernails digging through the fabric of his blue shirt. "What is it, David? What does it say? Don't listen to her games!"

David’s eyes darted frantically across the glowing text, his lips moving silently as his brain struggled to process the legal jargon. The words danced before his blurred vision: Immediate suspension pending internal investigation. Misappropriation of client acquisition funds. Unauthorized transfer of intellectual property. System access revoked.

"It... it's a mistake," David stammered, his voice cracking into a high, pathetic squeak that sounded nothing like the confident manager he pretended to be at the office. "HR made a clerical error. I sign off on those accounts every month with the director's verbal approval! It's standard procedure!"

"Verbal approval doesn't override federal wire fraud statutes, David," Elena said, stepping closer to him. The scent of her expensive perfume—vanilla and white amber—filled the confined space, but there was nothing comforting about her proximity. "Especially when the client whose funds you diverted to pay for Teresa’s country club dues happens to be an undercover federal compliance agency conducting a sting."

Teresa gasped, her knees buckling slightly. She caught herself by grabbing the edge of the hallway console table. "Federal? What are you talking about? My son is an executive! He golfs with the CEO!"

"Your son was a mid-level bureaucrat who was easily manipulated by department heads looking for a convenient scapegoat," Elena corrected coldly. "And I was the senior auditor assigned to review his division's portfolio. I didn't marry into this family to be your household maid, Teresa. I married David because I was running a background check on his department and needed close access to his files."

The betrayal hung in the air like thick, suffocating smoke. David stared at his wife, the woman who had shared his bed, cooked his meals, and listened to his daily complaints for half a decade, realizing with terrifying clarity that he never truly knew her at all.

"You... you set me up," David whispered, the fight completely draining out of his posture. "From the very beginning. You knew about the offshore accounts before we even met."

"I knew you had expensive tastes and no moral compass," Elena replied, turning her phone around so the recording light flashed directly in his eyes. "You made it entirely too easy."

Before David could formulate a defense, a heavy thud echoed from the driveway outside, followed by the crunch of heavy boots on gravel.
