Chapter 2: The Intercepted Key

David’s hand slapped against empty air as Elena effortlessly leaned back, keeping the recording device safely out of his reach. The red recording dot blinked steadily, a silent testament to years of recorded financial misconduct, hidden offshore accounts, and verbal abuse that David had foolishly assumed would remain within the walls of this pristine estate. Teresa stepped forward, her hand raised as if to strike her daughter-in-law across the face, but a sharp, persistent knock at the heavy mahogany front door froze her in place. The echoing sound shattered the tense silence of the kitchen.
"Who could that be?" Teresa muttered, lowering her hand while shooting a venomous glare back down at Elena. "David, go answer it. Probably another one of her useless deliveries of unnecessary clutter."
David didn’t move. His gaze remained locked on the glowing smartphone screen in Elena’s hand, his chest rising and falling in shallow, panicked breaths. He knew what deliveries usually arrived at this address. They were luxury items purchased not with his modest salary as a senior project manager at Vantage Global, but with corporate embezzlement funds disguised as client acquisition fees—funds that Elena, as the former chief forensic auditor of the very same firm, had systematically tracked for the past six months.
"I'll get it," Elena said smoothly, rising gracefully from the wooden floor without spilling a single tear. She smoothed the wrinkles of her white wrap dress, her movements agonizingly deliberate.
She walked past the frozen mother and son, her steps light and rhythmic against the hardwood. When she pulled open the heavy front door, a young courier in a bright yellow delivery uniform stood on the porch, holding a heavy manila envelope and a small brass key ring.
"Delivery for Elena Vance," the courier said professionally, handing over the envelope. "And I was instructed by property management to return the master override key to the primary homeowner. Here you go, ma'am."
Teresa, having followed closely behind, lunged past Elena to snatch the brass ring from the courier's hand. "Give that here! That belongs to the family estate!"
May you like
The courier blinked, looking confused as Teresa clutched the keys to her chest. But Elena’s phone remained pointed squarely at them, capturing every frantic, desperate movement.
"Before you celebrate those keys, Teresa," Elena said softly, turning the screen around to face them both, "you might want to check whose name is actually on the deed."
