Chapter 5: Unwelcome Visitors in Uniforms

The crunch of gravel outside grew louder, accompanied by the distinct, heavy rumble of idling diesel engines. Elena didn't flinch, but David and Teresa froze, their eyes darting simultaneously toward the tall, arched window overlooking the driveway. Through the pristine double-paned glass, two unmarked black SUVs had blocked the entrance, their emergency strobes flashing an eerie blue and red against the immaculate white facade of the house.
"What is that?" Teresa whispered, her voice losing all its prior venom, replaced by the frail panic of an aging woman realizing her comfortable world was dissolving into ash. "David, call your business partners! Call Marcus! Tell them to get these people off our property!"
David didn't move. He couldn't. His legs felt like lead, and the corporate phone in his hand continued to pulse with urgent notifications, each one chipping away another layer of his manufactured identity.
Heavy knocks hammered against the front door—not the polite tap of a delivery courier, but the authoritative, rhythmic pounding of law enforcement officers identifying themselves.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Open the door!"
Teresa jumped at the sound, looking desperately at her son, then back at Elena, who stood calmly by the console table with her handbag over her arm.
"You did this," Teresa hissed, venom returning to her voice as she pointed a shaky finger at Elena's chest. "You invited them here! You destroyed my family out of spite!"
"Your family destroyed itself through greed, Teresa," Elena replied, her voice steady and devoid of anger. "I merely handed the authorities the ledger. Every bribe, every kickback, every fraudulent expense report signed in this very kitchen—it’s all cataloged, time-stamped, and backed up on three separate cloud servers."
Elena reached out and calmly turned the deadbolt on the front door. With a smooth pull, she swung the heavy mahogany door wide open. Standing on the porch were two federal agents in dark tactical windbreakers, flanked by local county deputies. The lead agent, a stern-faced woman with her hair pulled back into a tight bun, flashed a gold badge before stepping across the threshold.
"David Vance?" the agent asked, scanning the hallway until her eyes locked onto the trembling man in the blue shirt.
David opened his mouth, but no sound came out. He nodded mechanically, the tie around his neck suddenly feeling like a noose.

"You’re being placed under arrest for wire fraud, embezzlement, and obstruction of justice," the agent stated, stepping forward with handcuffs ready.
As the cold steel cuffs clicked into place around David’s wrists, Teresa let out a piercing shriek and collapsed backward onto the foyer bench. But Elena didn't look at her sobbing mother-in-law. Her eyes were fixed on her own smartphone screen, where a brand-new notification banner had just popped up, signaling a development she hadn't even anticipated.
