Chapter 8 - The Midnight Intruder

The live video feed on Julian’s phone showed a dark, shadowy figure moving swiftly through his quiet kitchen. The intruder wore a black hoodie pulled low over their face, moving with practiced stealth, avoiding the primary camera angles before slipping down the hallway toward his private home office. Julian stared at the screen, his grip on the phone tightening until his knuckles turned white. His safe—the one containing the master encryption keys, hard copies of the forensic financial audits, and his late father’s physical will—was located behind a false bookshelf in that exact room.

“Damn it,” Julian muttered under his breath, turning sharply away from the server racks and sprinting toward the exit of the tech building.

He didn’t wait for his driver; he hopped into his own car, throwing the luxury sedan into reverse and burning rubber out of the corporate parking lot. The drive from downtown to his suburban neighborhood usually took thirty minutes, but tonight, fueled by adrenaline and sheer fury, Julian cut the travel time in half, weaving dangerously through late-night traffic.

When he finally pulled into his driveway, his heart hammered against his ribs. There was an unfamiliar sedan parked two houses down with its lights turned off, idling quietly in the dark. Julian killed his own headlights a block away, coasting silently into his driveway before cutting the engine entirely. He grabbed a heavy metal flashlight from his glove compartment, pushed his car door open, and slipped through the side gate into his backyard.

The sliding glass patio door was cracked open about six inches, the latch cleanly jimmied with a professional tool. Julian slipped inside the dark house like a ghost, moving silently across the hardwood floors. The house was dead quiet, save for the faint hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen.

He crept down the hallway toward his home office. A faint sliver of light leaked out from underneath the closed wooden door. Julian flattened his back against the wall beside the frame, gripping the heavy flashlight in his right hand. He listened carefully. He could hear the muffled sound of a keyboard clicking, followed by a frustrated curse whispered under someone’s breath.

With a sudden, explosive burst of movement, Julian kicked the office door wide open, swinging the flashlight forward as he commanded, “Don’t move!”

The beam of light cut through the dark room, illuminating the figure crouched in front of the open wall safe. It wasn’t a hired thug, and it wasn’t David Sterling. It was Clara herself.

She froze mid-reach, her hands hovering over a stack of physical documents inside the safe. She turned her head slowly, blinking against the blinding glare of the flashlight, her hair pulled back into a messy ponytail, completely devoid of the immaculate bridal styling from two days ago.

“Julian,” Clara breathed, her voice a mix of panic and fake vulnerability as she slowly stood up, trying to shield a flash drive behind her back. “Thank goodness you’re here. You have to listen to me. Someone broke in, and I was just trying to protect our assets!”

Julian lowered the flashlight slightly, his expression turning into a mask of pure, unadulterated disgust. He stepped into the room, locking the door behind him so she had nowhere to run.

“Our assets, Clara?” Julian asked quietly, his voice dangerously soft. “You’re standing in my private office at midnight, breaking into my personal safe, holding a data drive that matches the one your brother threatened me with in a parking garage. Don’t insult my intelligence any further.”

Clara’s fake smile dropped instantly, replaced by a cold, venomous glare as she dropped the innocent act entirely.

“You ruined my life, Julian,” Clara hissed, stepping away from the safe with a defiant tilt of her chin. “You publicly humiliated me, you canceled our wedding, and you tried to freeze my family out. All I wanted was what was rightfully mine!”

“Nothing in this house is yours,” Julian said, stepping closer to her. “And as of ten minutes ago, your brother’s inside man at my company has been arrested for industrial espionage. You’re not just dealing with a failed marriage anymore, Clara. You’re looking at federal prison time for conspiracy and extortion.”

Clara laughed, a high-pitched, manic sound that echoed off the bookshelves.

“You think the police will believe you over a heartbroken bride?” she taunted, stepping right up to his chest. “My father has judges in his pocket, Julian. You think you can destroy us, but you have no idea who—"

Before she could finish her sentence, the front doorbell downstairs rang loudly, shattering the tense silence of the house.
