Chapter 1 - The Broken Vows

The heavy oak doors of St. Jude’s Chapel framed the mid-afternoon light, casting long, dramatic shadows across the polished marble floor. Clara stood near the altar, her white lace wedding dress rustling softly as she shifted her weight. Her brown hair was pinned half-up, cascading in loose waves over pearls that shimmered against her neck. Julian, sharp in his black tuxedo and black bowtie, offered a reassuring smile. Then, the heavy silence of the church was broken by the gentle footsteps of Martha, Julian’s elderly mother. Wearing a simple, elegant light blue dress, Martha stepped forward with open arms, a tender smile illuminating her weathered face as she moved to embrace the bride.

Clara froze. A micro-expression of absolute disgust rippled across her face before she physically stepped back, pulling away from the welcoming embrace with a sharp, defensive jolt.

“Don't hug me,” Clara snapped, her voice cutting through the sacred quiet like broken glass.

Martha’s arms hovered in empty space, her expression crumbling into quiet disbelief.

Clara sneered, tossing her head back with a cold, unforgiving glint in her eyes.

“You smell like a farm,” Clara said loudly, her voice echoing off the stained-glass windows. “Stay away from me.”

A collective gasp rippled through the few seated family members in the pews. Julian’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by a rigid, terrifying mask of fury. He turned his head slowly, looking at Clara with eyes that burned with icy betrayal. The atmosphere in the chapel shifted from joyous celebration to an oppressive, suffocating tension. Julian stepped closer to his mother, shielding her slightly, before locking his gaze onto the woman he was supposed to marry in less than five minutes.

Julian’s voice was low, controlled, but laced with a dangerous edge.

“Apologize to my mother.”

Clara crossed her arms, ignoring the pearl earrings that danced against her jawline.

“I won’t apologize for telling the truth,” Clara shot back, her tone sharp and unrepentant. “She spends all her time in the dirt, and she has no business touching me on my wedding day.”

Julian’s chest rose and fell in a deep, measured breath. He reached out slowly, his fingers hovering over the delicate skin of Clara’s hand where a massive diamond engagement ring sparkled under the altar lights.

“Take off the ring,” Julian said, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. “This wedding is over.”

Clara’s jaw dropped, her arrogant facade cracking instantly as she stared at him in absolute shock.
