Chapter 7 - The Inside Man

The hum of the server racks in the basement of Julian’s tech headquarters sounded like a swarm of angry hornets. Julian stood in the chilled, sterile environment of the data center, flanked by two corporate security guards. Across the raised metal floor sat Eric Vance—no relation, despite the shared last name—who had been Julian’s lead software architect for the past four years. Eric’s fingers flew across his mechanical keyboard, though his hands were trembling visibly under the harsh glare of the overhead LED panels.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Julian,” Eric stammered, refusing to look up from his monitor. “Locking down the network? We’re in the middle of a major deployment cycle for our enterprise clients!”

“Stop typing, Eric,” Julian said quietly. His voice carried an eerie, quiet authority that made both security guards tense up.

Eric froze, his fingers hovering half an inch above the home row. He swallowed hard, his throat bobbing visibly.

“Julian, seriously, you’re making a mistake. I’ve built this infrastructure with you from day one,” Eric protested, forcing a nervous laugh that sounded entirely hollow.

“David Sterling approached me in my parking garage an hour ago,” Julian said, walking slowly across the metal grating until he stood directly behind Eric’s chair. He leaned down slightly, bringing his mouth close to the engineer’s ear. “He mentioned proprietary source code downloaded from our main repository last month. He even mentioned a very generous retainer fee paid to an inside man. Do you want to guess who my mind went to first?”

Eric’s face turned the color of spoiled milk. All the color drained from his cheeks, and a sheen of cold sweat broke out across his forehead. He stopped breathing for a moment, staring blankly at the code scrolling down his screen.

“They… they threatened me, Julian,” Eric whispered finally, his voice cracking as his shoulders slumped in total defeat. “My wife’s medical debt… it was piling up so fast. The hospital collection agency was threatening to foreclose on our house. Clara’s father found out through a mutual acquaintance, approached me at a charity gala, and offered to pay off the entire balance in full if I just handed over a backup archive of the core encryption algorithms.”

The security guards shifted uncomfortably, looking at Julian for instructions. Julian closed his eyes for a brief moment, feeling a deep, heavy sense of betrayal. It wasn’t just Clara; it was a sprawling web of manipulation that had infiltrated his professional life as well.

“You sold out our intellectual property, our company’s entire foundation, to pay off medical bills for a bride who spent twenty thousand dollars on a lace wedding dress she wore for ten minutes?” Julian asked, his voice shaking with restrained fury.

“I didn’t think it would hurt the company!” Eric cried out, turning around in his chair to face Julian with tear-filled eyes. “They said they only wanted leverage for a civil lawsuit! They swore they wouldn’t release it to competitors!”

“Greed always makes fools out of desperate people, Eric,” Julian said coldly. He nodded to the security guards. “Escort him to the conference room. Confiscate his corporate laptop, his phone, and his security badge. Call our legal counsel and let them know we are filing immediate criminal charges for industrial espionage.”

“Julian, please! Don’t do this! My family!” Eric sobbed as the two burly guards hauled him up out of his chair, pulling his arms behind his back.

“You should have thought about your family before you compromised mine,” Julian said, turning his back on the weeping engineer.

As the heavy metal door of the server room closed behind them, Julian pulled out his phone. The screen flashed with an alert from his private security system at his personal residence in the suburbs. A motion sensor had just been triggered at the back patio sliding door. Julian stared at the live video feed streaming onto his phone screen, and his breath caught in his throat. Someone was breaking into his house.
