Chapter 11 - The Father’s Gambit

The heavy oak door clicked shut, cutting off the distant, muffled shouts of Clara as she was placed into the back of the police cruiser. The flashing red and blue lights continued to paint the interior of the foyer in rhythmic, pulsing strokes. Martha let out a long, shuddering breath, leaning back against the cushions of the living room sofa. Julian walked over to her, knelt by her side, and gently took her weathered hands in his.
“Are you alright, Mom?” Julian asked, his voice softening completely as he looked into her tired eyes.
“I’m shaken, son, but I’m okay,” Martha said, offering him a weak, reassuring smile. “More than anything, I’m worried about you. This family… they aren’t going to let this go easily.”
“They don’t have a choice anymore,” Julian replied, standing up as he noticed the front door handle jiggling slightly.
Before Julian could reach for the deadbolt, the door swung open. Standing on the porch was Arthur Sterling—Clara’s father and the former CEO of Sterling Real Estate Development. He looked older than he had in corporate photographs, his silver hair uncombed and his expensive suit wrinkled, but his eyes still carried the hard, predatory glint of a man who had spent decades buying and selling people.
“Vance,” Arthur said, his voice raspy and low as he stepped uninvited into the foyer, brushing past the spot where his daughter had just been arrested.
“You’re trespassing, Arthur,” Julian said flatly, blocking the hallway that led to the living room where Martha was resting. “I suggest you turn around and walk back out that door before I call the same officers back inside to arrest you for aiding and abetting.”
Arthur let out a dry, humorless chuckle. He glanced toward the living room, catching a brief glimpse of Martha sitting on the sofa before turning his cold gaze back to Julian.
“My daughter made a mistake,” Arthur said smoothly, stepping closer with an air of arrogant entitlement. “She let her emotions cloud her judgment about a failed wedding. But putting her in handcuffs? That’s an escalation we can all walk back from.”
“Your daughter didn’t just make a mistake; she committed extortion, hired an inside man to steal my company’s intellectual property, and threatened my mother’s physical safety,” Julian fired back, his voice rising with controlled fury. “There is no walking back from felony charges, Arthur. The legal system is going to handle the rest.”
Arthur’s expression darkened instantly. The mask of a concerned father slipped away, revealing the ruthless corporate shark underneath.
“You think you hold all the cards because you caught Eric passing along some old source code?” Arthur sneered, stepping right up to Julian’s face. “You don’t know how deep my connections go, Julian. If Clara goes down, she doesn’t go down alone. I have a sealed document detailing every single offshore tax loophole your late father used to build your initial tech startup twenty years ago. If you don't drop the charges by sunrise, I leak the entire portfolio to the IRS and the national press. Your company, your legacy, and your father’s good name will be completely obliterated.”
Julian stared at the older man. For a second, the threat hung heavily in the air. His father’s legacy—the clean, honest reputation the old man had built—was something Julian guarded more fiercely than his own life.
“You’re bluffing,” Julian said coldly. “If my father’s startup had illegal offshore accounts, your forensic audit team would have used it months ago instead of resorting to blackmail.”
Arthur smiled, a chilling, triumphant expression.
“We didn't want to burn down the house we planned to move into, Julian,” Arthur whispered. “But now that you’ve torched it yourself, let’s see how warm you stay in the ashes.”

Before Julian could answer, Arthur turned sharply on his heel, walked out the front door into the night, and sped away into the darkness, leaving Julian standing in the quiet hallway with a fresh nightmare on his hands.
