Chapter 10 - The Trap Closes

The audio recording hung in the air of the living room like a physical weight, playing back Clara’s own voice confessing to the intimidation plot against Martha. Martha sat quietly on the sofa, her hands resting calmly in her lap as she looked up at the young woman who had tried to destroy her family. There were no tears in Martha’s eyes—only a profound, steady disappointment.

Clara stood frozen on the landing of the staircase, her fingers gripping the wooden banister so tightly her knuckles turned white. The arrogant, untouchable facade she had worn since the altar had completely shattered, leaving behind a cornered, panicked fraud.

“That… that’s a deepfake,” Clara stammered desperately, her voice rising in pitch as she took a step down the stairs. “Anyone can generate audio files using AI nowadays! You’re framing me, Julian! You’re trying to ruin me!”

Julian slowly slipped his phone back into his coat pocket. He didn’t raise his voice; his calm demeanor was far more terrifying than any outburst could ever be.

“Keep talking, Clara,” Julian said quietly. “Every word you say right now is being logged by the local police precinct’s direct line. I didn’t just set up office cameras; I patched my smart home security system into the county dispatch database the moment my mother called me from her house.”

As if on cue, the wail of approaching sirens echoed softly in the distance, growing louder by the second as multiple police cruisers turned onto their suburban street, their red and blue emergency lights flashing frantically against the exterior brick walls of the house.

Clara’s breath hitched. She spun around on the staircase, looking wildly toward the back windows as if considering jumping, before realizing there was nowhere left to run.

“You can’t do this to me,” Clara whispered, tears finally welling in her eyes—not out of genuine remorse, but out of sheer self-preservation. “We were supposed to be married! We were a family!”

“A family doesn’t threaten an innocent mother with violence to protect stolen money,” Julian said firmly. He walked over to the front door and unlocked the deadbolts just as heavy, synchronized knocks echoed against the wood.

Julian pulled the door open to reveal two uniformed police officers and a plainclothes detective holding a signed arrest warrant.

“Mr. Vance?” the lead detective asked, flashing his badge. “We received your automated distress ping and the audio logs regarding the extortion and intimidation case.”

“Right this way, Detective,” Julian said, stepping aside to let them enter. He pointed up the stairs. “The suspect is currently attempting to flee up the main staircase. Her name is Clara Sterling.”

The two uniformed officers moved past Julian with practiced efficiency, climbing the stairs quickly.

“Clara Sterling, you are under arrest for extortion, conspiracy to commit industrial espionage, and terroristic threats,” the lead officer stated clearly, clicking a pair of cold steel handcuffs around her wrists as she screamed and thrashed against them.

“Get your hands off me! You don’t know who my father is!” Clara shrieked, her voice echoing shrilly off the walls as she was dragged down the stairs past Martha and Julian.

Julian didn’t flinch as she passed him. He simply watched her go, feeling a profound sense of closure washing over him at last. But as Clara was being led out the front door into the flashing lights of the police cruiser, a black unmarked car pulled up slowly behind the squad cars, and a tired-looking man in an expensive suit stepped out from the passenger side, staring directly at Julian with an expression that promised this war was far from over.
