Chapter 9 - The Impossible Choice

Everyone spun around. Martha was standing at the edge of the wooden partition panel, her cane resting against the wall as she caught her breath. She had managed to climb down the utility ladder entirely on her own, driven by an indomitable inner fire.

"Martha! You shouldn't have come down here, it's too dangerous," Maya rushed over, taking the elderly woman's cold, frail hand.

Martha managed a weak, knowing smile. "I built this secret room with my father when I was twelve years old, Maya. I know every brick, every beam, and every hidden cavity in this foundation."

Arthur stepped forward, sweeping his flashlight beam across the towering shelves. "Show us, Martha. The demolition crews are scheduled to bring this entire structure down at dawn."

Martha walked slowly toward the far corner of the subterranean room, where an old oak historical display case sat covered in a heavy canvas tarp. She reached out with trembling fingers, pulling the canvas away to reveal a glass-topped wooden table displaying yellowed town maps and pioneer artifacts from the nineteenth century.

"My father didn't hide the deed inside a box," Martha said, tapping her cane lightly against the base of the display case. "He built a false bottom directly beneath the main display platform. The city archives inspectors never checked underneath because they assumed the display case was bolted permanently to the concrete foundation."

Mr. Henderson dropped to his knees, running his hands along the dusty wooden base of the heavy case. "She's right. There's a hidden sliding latch here. But it's jammed tight with decades of dirt and swollen oak."

"Use the crowbar," Maya urged, handing him the heavy iron tool that Arthur had carried down the tunnel.

Mr. Henderson wedged the flat end of the crowbar into the narrow seam of the wooden base. He strained, his muscles locking as he applied maximum leverage. With a sharp, cracking sound that echoed loudly through the cavernous basement, the wooden panel gave way, sliding open to reveal a dark, hollow compartment beneath the display case.

Maya reached inside eagerly, her small hand brushing against a cylindrical object wrapped in thick, yellowed oilcloth tied with frayed twine. She pulled it out carefully into the light, holding it up like a precious artifact.

"Is this it?" Maya whispered, her breath hitching.

Martha reached out, her fingers gently touching the faded ink calligraphy on the outer wrapper. Tears streamed down her weathered cheeks. "It's the original land grant deed. Signed, sealed, and legally registered in nineteen-forty-two."

Before anyone could celebrate, a harsh, blinding glare cut through the darkness from the utility tunnel entrance behind them.

"Don't move!" a harsh voice echoed through the sub-basement.

Three municipal police officers, accompanied by Julianna Cross, stepped out from the utility corridor, their heavy-duty flashlights aimed directly at Maya, Arthur, Mr. Henderson, and Martha.
