Chapter 7 - Trapped in the Subterranean Vault

Julianna Cross stepped closer to the edge of the open hatch, her heels clicking rhythmically against the asphalt. Her security guards fanned out, cutting off any possibility of retreating back toward the main street.

"You're committing a federal offense by tampering with municipal infrastructure, Arthur," Julianna said smoothly, though her eyes betrayed a hint of nervous calculation as she noticed Maya's phone recording her every word. "And as for you, Mr. Henderson, your commercial lease is officially terminated as of midnight tonight."

Mr. Henderson dropped the industrial flashlight, his face draining completely of color. "You can't do that! I've run that store for fifteen years! My family's life savings are tied up in that inventory!"

"Corporate restructuring doesn't negotiate with rogue employees," Julianna replied coldly. She gestured to the two guards. "Secure the hatch. Confiscate the child's phone. Get these squatters off the property before local law enforcement arrives."

Before the guards could take a single step forward, Arthur Vance moved with surprising speed. He grabbed Maya by the shoulder and shoved her gently toward the open ladder. "Go, Maya! Drop down into the tunnel now! Don't look back!"

"Arthur!" Maya screamed in protest, but the momentum of his push carried her over the lip of the hatch. Her sneakers found the first rusted rung of the metal ladder, and she scrambled downward into the darkness, her small frame disappearing beneath the street level.

"Hey! Stop them!" Julianna shouted, lunging forward.

Mr. Henderson, fueled by a sudden surge of desperate adrenaline and existential rage, threw his entire body into the path of the nearest security guard, tackling the larger man backward into a pile of cardboard boxes. The ensuing crash echoed sharply down the narrow brick alleyway.

Arthur didn't hesitate. He dived headfirst into the open hatch just as Julianna's manicured hand swiped desperately at the back of his windbreaker, missing by mere centimeters. He slammed the heavy iron plate shut from the inside, plunging the utility tunnel into absolute, suffocating darkness.

A muffled, furious pounding echoed against the metal plate above their heads. "Open this hatch right now or you will spend the rest of your lives in a maximum-security federal penitentiary!" Julianna's voice vibrated through the metal.

"Keep moving down! Don't stop!" Arthur's voice boomed in the enclosed space, followed by the metallic click of his lighter sparking to life, casting a flickering, ghostly yellow glow over the damp concrete walls.

Maya was standing at the bottom of the ladder, her chest heaving as she held the phone aloft, its screen casting an ethereal blue light across her tear-stained face. "My live stream is still broadcasting," she whispered in awe. "Ten thousand people just watched her try to steal my phone."
