Chapter 3 - The Secret on the Sidewalk

Maya froze, her sneakers squeaking softly against the linoleum floor as she turned back to face Arthur Vance. The pre-packaged sandwich felt suddenly heavy in her hands. Mr. Henderson leaned over the counter, his mouth slightly open in genuine confusion.
"What do you mean, she isn't who we think she is?" Mr. Henderson asked, his voice dropping an octave. "Everyone in town knows old Martha. She's just a local vagrant who's lived on these streets for as long as I can remember."
Arthur shook his head slowly, sliding his phone back into his coat pocket. "Martha isn't her real name. And she didn't just end up on this sidewalk by some tragic accident of fate. Twenty years ago, she owned the very land this strip mall and your grocery store are currently built upon."
Maya stepped closer, her wide brown eyes fixed on Arthur's face. "She owned all of this? Then why is she sitting out there in a tattered coat asking for food?"
"A hostile corporate buyout," Arthur stated, his expression grim. "Engineered by the exact conglomerate I now manage. My predecessors systematically stripped her family of their assets, falsified zoning documents, and threw her out on the street with nothing when she refused to sign away the final deed."
Mr. Henderson slammed his hand down on the counter. "That's impossible! That's ancient history. The legal statute of limitations ran out years ago. You can't just bring up old ghost stories to ruin a profitable commercial lease."
"It's not a ghost story, Henderson. It's an ongoing crime of negligence," Arthur replied, stepping toward the glass storefront to look out at Martha through the window. She was still sitting against the red brick wall, her long grey hair blowing gently in the afternoon breeze, looking completely unaware of the conversation taking place inside.
Maya clutched the plastic-wrapped sandwich tightly. "We have to give her the food right now. And then we have to help her get her home back."
"Food is a good start, Maya," Arthur said, turning back to the little girl with a soft, encouraging smile. "Step outside. I want to see her reaction when you hand her that sandwich. But be prepared; what happens next is going to shock everyone watching your live feed."

Maya nodded resolutely, pushing open the heavy glass door and stepping back out onto the sunlit sidewalk, completely unaware that a sleek black sedan was slowly pulling up to the curb.
