Chapter 12 - The Dry Riverbed Escape

The air grew thick with acrid dust as the sounds of falling brick and twisting steel echoed heavily from the upper floors of the archives building. Maya led the frantic group through the maze of towering metal shelves toward the back of the sub-basement, her sneakers pounding rhythmically against the concrete floor.
"Right here," Martha gasped, pointing with her wooden cane at a heavy iron wheel valve set into the concrete wall next to a massive, rusted industrial water pump. "Turn the wheel counter-clockwise, Arthur. Three full rotations."
Arthur didn't hesitate. He grabbed the heavy iron wheel with both hands, straining with every ounce of his strength. The rusted mechanism groaned loudly, protesting against decades of disuse, before suddenly giving way with a loud, metallic snap.
A heavy iron plate in the floor swung downward, revealing a steep brick-lined drainage chute leading out into the cool night air. The faint sound of rushing wind and distant highway traffic drifted down into the basement.
"Go, go, go!" Mr. Henderson urged, practically pushing Marcus and Martha toward the opening.
Marcus dropped down first, setting up his broadcast camera on its stabilizing tripod at the bottom of the chute to maintain the continuous live feed. "I'm down! Send Maya and Martha next!"
Arthur carefully lowered Martha down the steep brick incline, ensuring her frail body was supported every inch of the way. Mr. Henderson followed right behind her, sliding down on his stomach and landing in a heap of dust on the gravel floor of the dry riverbed outside.
Maya stood at the edge of the opening, clutching the oilcloth-wrapped land deed to her chest. She looked up as another massive shockwave shook the subterranean room, sending a cloud of pulverized drywall cascading down around her.
"Maya, jump! I've got you!" Arthur shouted from the bottom of the chute, holding his arms out wide.
Maya didn't hesitate. She threw herself forward into the dark opening, sliding rapidly down the smooth brick surface and landing squarely in Arthur's arms. Arthur spun around and shielded her with his body as the main entrance of the sub-basement finally gave way entirely, burying the archives building in a mountain of rubble.
They lay panting in the dry riverbed under the clear, starlit American sky, surrounded by the cool night air. Marcus kept his broadcast camera rolling, capturing the exhausted faces of the survivors.
"We made it," Maya whispered, a brilliant, radiant smile breaking through the dirt and sweat on her face. She held up the oilcloth parcel triumphantly. "And we still have the deed."

Suddenly, the wail of police sirens and emergency vehicle horns echoed loudly from the street above, followed by the blinding sweep of a helicopter spotlight cutting through the darkness directly overhead.
