Chapter 4 - The Black Sedan

The heavy luxury sedan glided silently to a halt directly in front of the grocery store entrance, its tinted windows reflecting the afternoon glare. Maya paused, her light pink t-shirt fluttering in the sudden draft created by the idling vehicle. Martha looked up from the pavement, her weathered face tightening with a sudden, uncharacteristic look of sheer terror.
"Maya, honey, don't go near that car," Martha whispered hoarsely, her voice cracking as she pressed her frail back harder against the rough brick wall. Her trembling hands gripped the hem of her tattered brownish-grey coat.
Before Maya could take another step, the rear door of the sedan swung open smoothly. A tall, impeccably dressed woman in a sharp navy blue pantsuit stepped out. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a severe bun, and her expression was completely devoid of warmth. It was Julianna Cross, the chief legal counsel for the corporate conglomerate that owned the block.
"Martha," Julianna said, her voice cutting through the ambient street noise with surgical precision. "It has been a long time. We thought you learned your lesson about staying away from this commercial district."
Arthur Vance stepped out of the grocery store doorway behind Maya, his face instantly hardening into a mask of corporate authority. "Back off, Julianna. Your jurisdiction out here ended the moment your legal team fabricated those signatures back in ninety-eight."
Julianna didn't even blink as she addressed Arthur. "You're jeopardizing millions of dollars in upcoming municipal redevelopments, Arthur. One little girl with a cell phone and a viral live stream cannot undo a legally binding corporate framework."
"Watch me," Arthur countered, stepping forward to stand protectively beside Maya and the elderly woman.
Passersby began to slow down on the sidewalk, pulling out their own phones to record the escalating confrontation. Mr. Henderson peered anxiously through the grocery store window, pressing his palms against the glass.
Martha began to hyperventilate, her weathered chest heaving rapidly as tears spilled down her lined cheeks. "They... they took everything," she sobbed softly, grabbing Maya's small wrist with surprising strength. "They took the papers, Maya. They burned the original deed in front of my eyes."
Maya looked down at Martha's frail hand, then glared directly at the corporate lawyer. "You're a bad person," the little girl said, her voice steady and ringing with pure moral clarity. "You have nice clothes, but your heart is completely black."

Julianna smiled coldly, stepping closer to the little girl. "Cute speech, kid. But sentimentality doesn't hold up in court. And unless you have the physical paper copy of that original deed, that woman remains a trespasser."
