Chapter 6 - The Federal Audit

The heavy oak doors of the Vance estate library trembled as three federal marshals in dark suits stepped inside, led by a stern-faced senior investigator named Agent Miller. Julian stood near the mahogany desk, his posture rigid, while Evelyn paced furiously across the Persian rug like a caged animal. Her diamond earrings flashed in the morning light, perfectly matching the manicured coldness of her expression.

"This is an outrage," Evelyn snapped, jabbing a manicured finger toward Agent Miller. "My family name carries weight in this city. You cannot simply waltz into a private residence without an ironclad court order."

Agent Miller did not blink. He pulled a thick document from his briefcase and laid it flat on the center of the desk. "The order was signed by a federal judge less than an hour ago, Mrs. Vance. We have probable cause regarding corporate fraud, asset concealment, and the illegal seizure of estate holdings dating back twenty-five years."

Clara stepped out from the shadows near the bookshelf, her grey maid uniform crisp and immaculate. She held the small gold signet ring between her thumb and forefinger, letting the embossed crest catch the light. "The previous administration may have burned the paperwork, Agent Miller, but they forgot that original corporate charters are registered directly with the maritime commission."

Julian looked at his sister, a complex mix of awe and dread twisting in his chest. "You knew about the maritime registry all along?"

"Father taught me how to read the codes before the fire," Clara replied evenly, sliding the signet ring into her apron pocket. "He trusted me with the vault keys before the smoke filled the nursery."

Evelyn let out a harsh, high-pitched laugh, though her eyes betrayed a flicker of genuine panic. "A fairy tale! You were a toddler when the estate burned. You didn't even know your own name until some back-alley scoundrel took you in."

"I knew enough to survive," Clara countered, stepping closer to Evelyn until the distance between them evaporated. "And I know enough to tear down every brick of this corrupt empire."

Agent Miller cleared his throat, breaking the heavy tension in the room. He reached into his briefcase and withdrew a second, much heavier folder stamped with red classification seals.

"Mr. Vance, Mrs. Vance," Agent Miller said slowly, looking between them. "We didn't just come here for tax evasion. We found a secondary account linked directly to the night of the fire, showing a massive wire transfer made to the lead investigator who closed your father’s case."

Julian gasped, staggering back against the bookshelf as the full weight of the deception crashed down upon him.

"The transfer was signed by Julian's father-in-law," Clara whispered, her eyes locking onto Evelyn's pale, frozen face.
