Chapter 14 - The Singapore Vault

The air inside the subterranean vault of the Singapore port authority was thick with the scent of aged paper, damp concrete, and decades of forgotten dust. The massive steel door, three feet thick and reinforced with hardened titanium, stood slightly ajar, casting a single golden beam of light across the dark, cavernous interior.
Clara walked down the concrete steps with measured, silent footfalls, her wool coat sweeping the floor. Behind her, Julian struggled to keep pace, his breathing ragged from the humidity and the exhausting twenty-hour flight.
"This is it," Julian whispered, shining his flashlight against the towering metal rows of safety deposit boxes. "Phoenix Maritime's primary archive."
Clara stopped in front of the central pillar, a massive cylindrical safe bearing the embossed crest of the Vance family. She did not hesitate. Taking off her right glove, she pressed the gold signet ring directly into the circular brass indentation at the center of the cylinder.
For a second, nothing happened. Then, with a heavy, satisfying clack, internal gears began to grind and shift, releasing a hiss of pressurized air that had been sealed inside for a quarter of a century.
The heavy steel faceplate swung open smoothly, revealing a single velvet-lined compartment containing a thick leather-bound journal and a video cassette marked with a handwritten label: To My Children.
Julian reached out, his trembling fingers brushing the leather cover. "Father's handwriting... he knew someone would come back for this."
Before Clara could reach for the journal, a slow, rhythmic clapping echoed from the dark corridor behind them.
"Magnificent," a raspy, elderly voice sneered from the shadows.
Out of the darkness stepped a tall, silver-haired man leaning heavily on an ebony cane. His tailored suit was expensive, but his eyes held the cold, dead look of a predator who had waited twenty-five years for this exact moment.
May you like
"Victor Sterling," Clara said, her voice dropping an octave as she turned to face him, her hand resting calmly on the gold signet ring.
