Chapter 3 - The Morning After

Morning sunlight filtered through the stained-glass windows of the Vance estate library, casting long, bruised shadows across the mahogany desk where Julian sat with his head in his hands. He had not slept. The gold signet ring he had managed to sketch from memory still haunted his thoughts, matching the lingering phantom of a childhood he had spent decades trying to forget.

The heavy oak door swung open without a knock. Evelyn strode into the room, her silver-threaded dressing gown sweeping the floor behind her. Her face was set in a mask of calculated fury. She slammed a thick manila folder onto the polished wood, inches from Julian’s elbow.

"Sign these transfer documents immediately, Julian," Evelyn commanded, crossing her arms tightly over her chest. "We are selling the coastal vineyards and liquidating the trust. That imposter maid has already contacted our primary investors, claiming she holds legal seniority over the estate holdings."

Julian slowly raised his head. His eyes were bloodshot, dark circles accentuating the haunted lines around his mouth. He looked at his wife of fifteen years—a woman he suddenly realized he never truly knew.

"You knew, didn't you?" Julian asked, his voice deathly quiet.

Evelyn scoffed, tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder. "Know what? That some lunatic in a maid’s uniform is trying to shake us down? Of course not. But I know a hostile takeover when I see one. If you don't have her arrested for extortion by noon, I will call the board myself and have you stripped of your CEO title for mental incompetence."

Julian stood up slowly, towering over his wife. The grief that had paralyzed him in the ballroom had hardened into something cold and sharp.

"My sister," Julian said, tasting the words as if they were poison, "is the rightful heir to the Vance shipping empire. If she survived the fire, everything we own—this house, this company, your precious gowns—belongs to her."

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure venom. She stepped closer, her voice dropping to a dangerous hiss. "You touch that ring, Julian, and I swear I will expose every dirty secret your father buried to build this dynasty. You think you're noble? You're just a coward."

Julian didn't flinch. He picked up the manila folder, opened it, and calmly tore the transfer documents down the middle.

"Let her expose them," Julian whispered, walking past her toward the door. "We're already burning down anyway."
