Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Hallway

The servants' quarters on the third floor of the Vance estate were cramped, smelling faintly of lemon polish and damp wool. Clara sat at a small wooden table by the window, meticulously cleaning the gold signet ring with a soft cloth. A single candle flickered against the encroaching dusk, casting dancing shadows across her sharp cheekbones and the grey fabric of her maid dress.

A soft knock rattled the wooden door. Clara didn’t look up.

"It's unlocked," she said evenly.

The heavy oak creaked open, revealing Julian in a rumpled white dress shirt, his tuxedo jacket left downstairs. He looked smaller out here, stripped of the corporate armor that usually protected him. He stepped inside, closing the door softly behind him, as if afraid the very walls would hear them.

"You shouldn't be up here, Julian," Clara murmured, polishing the crest until it gleamed. "The staff gossip is bad enough without the master of the house slumming it in the attic."

Julian swallowed hard, taking a tentative step toward the table. "Clara... please. Just talk to me. Why did you come back like this? Why hide as a maid instead of coming straight to my office?"

Clara stopped cleaning. She placed the ring down on the wood with a sharp clack. She stood up, turning to face him, her eyes reflecting the flickering candlelight with a cold, unyielding fire.

"And walk into your board meeting wearing an expensive suit? So you could write me a generous check, buy my silence, and send me back to whatever obscure corner of the world you thought I died in?" Clara shook her head, a bitter smile touching her lips. "I wanted to see who you had become, little brother. I wanted to see if the boy who used to hide behind my skirts grew up to be a man with a spine, or just another puppet dancing to Evelyn’s tune."

Julian flinched as if struck. "I didn't know you were alive, Clara! Father told me everyone perished. I spent twenty years believing I was the last of us."

"Father lied about a lot of things," Clara said, stepping closer until only a few inches separated them. "He lied about the accounts. He lied about the fire. And most importantly, he lied about who pulled the trigger on the family’s legacy."

Before Julian could demand an explanation, a sharp crash echoed from the hallway outside, followed by the sound of muffled weeping. Clara’s expression instantly hardened as she pulled open the door.

There, kneeling on the Persian runner with a shattered porcelain teacup scattered around her, was young housemaid Maya, trembling violently as Evelyn stood over her, raising a heavy silver tray to strike.
