Chapter 10 - The Net Closes

The heavy oak doors of the hallway swung open wide, revealing Agent Miller flanked by four federal marshals in tactical gear. The sharp beam of a flashlight cut through the dim shadows, illuminating the terrified face of Marcus cowering against the wall, Julian standing in stunned defeat, and Evelyn frozen in place with the camera still clutched in her trembling hands.
"Mrs. Vance," Agent Miller announced, his voice echoing off the high ceilings with authoritative finality. "Put the camera down. You are under arrest for conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and corporate espionage."
Evelyn backed away, shaking her head violently. "You can't touch me! My family owns half the banks in this state! This is a setup! Julian, tell them!" She turned desperately toward her husband, her aristocratic mask completely shattering into raw, desperate terror. "Julian, you love me! Tell them this maid is lying!"
Julian looked at his wife—the woman he had shared a bed with for fifteen years, the woman who had worn diamonds bought with the blood of his parents and sister. He felt nothing. The last ember of affection had been extinguished the moment Marcus confessed.
"I don't even know who you are, Evelyn," Julian said quietly, turning his back on her.
Agent Miller stepped forward, gesturing to the marshals. Two officers moved swiftly, gently but firmly taking Evelyn by the arms and relieving her of the camera. The silver click of handcuffs echoed sharply through the corridor, ending an era of tyranny built on ashes.
As Evelyn was dragged past Clara, she spat venomously onto the polished floor. "You think you've won, you common rat? The board will never accept a maid as CEO! The company will go bankrupt within the month!"
Clara watched her former tormentor pass without flinching. She reached into her pocket, pulled out the gold signet ring, and slipped it smoothly onto her right index finger.
"The board answers to the majority shareholder, Evelyn," Clara replied, her voice cold and absolute. "And as of nine o'clock this morning, the controlling stake of Vance Shipping has reverted entirely to the legal heir."
Evelyn let out a feral scream of absolute fury as the marshals pushed her down the grand staircase, her expensive silk gown rustling against the banister like dry leaves in a dying forest.
Agent Miller lingered for a moment, handing a thick manila envelope to Clara. "The forensic team recovered the original deeds from the burnt wing's vault remnants, Miss Vance. Everything is legally verified."
"Thank you, Agent Miller," Clara said, taking the envelope.

As the federal agents cleared the hallway, taking Marcus and Evelyn away into the rainy night, only Clara and Julian remained in the quiet, drafty corridor.
