Chapter 8: The Safe on the Third Floor

The third-floor executive suite was usually dark at this hour, illuminated only by the moonlight spilling through the arched skylights. Eleanor stood before the concealed wall safe hidden behind a portrait of Julian’s grandfather. Her fingers danced rapidly across the digital keypad, punching in the six-digit override code she had secretly recorded weeks prior. The heavy steel door clicked and swung open, revealing rows of confidential physical documents, bearer bonds, and the original deed to the Sterling family estate.
She reached inside, her gloved fingers closing around the manila folder containing the title deed. This was her ultimate leverage. If she burned the deed, Clara’s ancestral home would legally dissolve into the Vance corporate holdings, leaving the girl with nothing to anchor her to her past.
"Looking for something, Eleanor?"
The voice echoed coldly through the cavernous suite, freezing Eleanor in her tracks. She spun around to find Julian standing in the doorway, his silhouette blocking the only exit. His hands were tucked casually into his trouser pockets, but the tension in his broad shoulders signaled complete readiness for confrontation.
"You're trespassing in your own house?" Eleanor forced a harsh laugh, trying to mask the sudden flutter of panic in her chest. "I am simply securing corporate assets that you have been illegally withholding from the board."
"Those aren't corporate assets, Eleanor," Julian said, stepping slowly into the moonlight. "That is the deed to the Sterling estate—property you and your family stole through fraudulent bankruptcy filings twenty years ago."
Eleanor gripped the manila folder tighter against her emerald suit jacket. "Prove it. By tomorrow morning, the board will vote to strip you of your CEO status, and I will walk away with half the company and this entire estate. You think you can protect that nobody maid? You’re both going down."
"You keep underestimating people, Eleanor," Julian replied evenly.
From the shadows behind him stepped Marcus, the head of security, holding a digital tablet that was actively recording the entire exchange. Marcus gave Julian a respectful nod, flashing the green recording indicator light.

"Thank you for the confession, Mrs. Vance," Marcus said, his voice entirely devoid of the subservient tone he usually used around her. "The board’s ethics committee has already received a live stream of this conversation."
Eleanor’s face drained of all color. The trap had snapped shut, and she was the one caught inside the jaws.
