Chapter 4: The Poisoned Breakfast Tray

The morning sun filtered through the leaded glass windows of the grand dining room, casting long geometric shadows across the mahogany table. Eleanor sat at the head, impeccably dressed in a tailored emerald pantsuit, sipping black coffee as she reviewed financial portfolios on her tablet. When Julian entered the room, his dark suit immaculate and his expression neutral, she did not look up immediately.
"Good morning, husband," Eleanor said, the sarcasm dripping effortlessly from her tongue. "I trust your night in the servant quarters was comfortable?"
Julian pulled out his chair opposite her, sitting with deliberate slowness. "Clara is recovering from the concussion you gave her. Calling it a guest suite doesn't make your assault any less cowardly, Eleanor."
Eleanor set her coffee cup down with a sharp clink against the saucer. She leaned forward, resting her elbows on the polished wood, her eyes flashing with calculated malice. "She doesn't belong here, Julian. You brought a pregnant maid into my house under false pretenses. Do you take me for a fool? I know whose child she is carrying. Richard Sterling’s daughter carrying a Vance heir—or worse, carrying a bastard that ties our company assets into a contested trust."
Julian didn't flinch. He picked up a silver knife and buttered a slice of artisan toast. "You assume a great deal based on gossip and paranoia."
"I assume nothing," Eleanor countered, tapping her tablet screen. "I have the hospital admission records from last night. The attending physician noted blunt force trauma to the forehead, consistent with being shoved against a wall. Furthermore, my private investigator confirmed that Clara’s employment paperwork was personally approved by your corporate secretary, bypassing normal human resources channels."

She paused, letting the silence stretch before delivering her ultimatum. "Sign the divorce papers, Julian. Hand over your voting shares in Vance Industries, and I will quietly dismiss the girl with a severance package that allows her to disappear to some remote town. Refuse, and I will press criminal assault charges against you for protecting her, while dragging both of your names through every tabloid in the country."
Julian calmly set his knife down, wiped his mouth with a linen napkin, and met her piercing gaze without a single tremor of fear. "You think you hold all the cards, Eleanor. But you forgot one fundamental detail: I own the board, and I own the mortgage on this estate. You want a war? Let's play."
