Chapter 7: The Midnight Audit

Midnight descended upon the Vance estate like a heavy velvet shroud. Inside his private study, Julian sat illuminated only by the cold blue glow of dual computer monitors. Spread across his desk were hard copies of corporate bank statements, shell company registries, and transfer authorizations. Eleanor had not been bluffing; she had spent months compiling a comprehensive paper trail designed to frame him for corporate embezzlement and breach of fiduciary duty.
The door clicked open, and Clara stepped inside, carrying a steaming mug of black coffee. She placed it quietly beside his keyboard, her eyes scanning the complex financial graphs on the screen.
"Are you going to beat her to it?" Clara asked softly, resting a hand on the back of his leather chair.
"I don't need to beat her," Julian replied without looking away from the screen, though his hand rose to cover hers. "I just need to let her trap herself. Eleanor’s audit relies on falsified timestamps from a subsidiary firm in the Cayman Islands—a firm she secretly controls through a proxy account under her maiden name."
Clara frowned, pulling up a chair to sit beside him. "If you’ve known about the proxy account for months, why didn't you expose her earlier?"
"Because a cornered animal bites indiscriminately," Julian said, turning to look at her. His dark eyes softened as he looked at the young woman who had become his anchor in a world of sharks. "I needed concrete proof that she wasn't just embezzling corporate funds, but that she was actively conspiring to sabotage our development projects to tank the stock value before our upcoming merger."
Clara traced the edge of her father’s leather journal, which she had placed on the corner of the desk. "My father discovered something similar right before he died. He found out that Eleanor’s family had been skimming off the top of the Sterling-Vance engineering joint venture."
Julian’s jaw tightened. "And my father covered it up to protect the corporate reputation. That is the original sin of this family, Clara. Every brick of this estate was laid over someone else's ruin. But I am going to tear it down and build something honest."

Just then, a soft beep echoed from the hallway security monitor. Julian glanced at the small screen. Marcus, the head of security, was walking away from the main safe in the executive suite on the third floor, clutching a manila folder in his hand.
"She’s making her move early," Julian whispered, standing up with sudden, controlled fury. "Stay here, Clara. Lock the door. It's time to end this."
