Chapter 6 - The Heavy Boots on the Stairs

The heavy, rhythmic thud of combat boots echoed up the grand staircase, drowning out the faint notes of the string quartet downstairs. Blue and red lights flashed through the tall arched windows of the hallway, painting the black-and-white checkered floor in eerie, pulsing streaks of color. Clara scrambled to her feet, her sparkling gold dress stained with dirt and blood, her hair wild as she tried to bolt toward the service exit at the end of the corridor.

"Don't even think about it, Clara," a deep, authoritative voice boomed from the top of the stairs.

Two state troopers in dark uniforms stepped into the hallway, their hands resting near the holsters at their belts, their flashlights cutting sharp beams through the dim amber light of the wall sconces. The lead officer, a tall man with iron-gray hair and sharp, weathered features named Sergeant Miller, swept his gaze across the chaotic scene: Clara standing frozen near the service door, Elena trapped against the wall in her blood-spattered magenta gown, and Julian standing calmly in the center of the room with his hands tucked neatly into his tuxedo pockets.

"Which one of you called it in?" Sergeant Miller asked, his eyes lingering on the smear of blood on Clara’s forehead and the broken glass scattered across the marble.

"I did," Julian said smoothly, stepping forward to intercept the officer. "My name is Julian Vanderbilt. My wife, Elena Vanderbilt, and our business associate, Clara Hayes, were involved in an altercation that resulted in severe injuries and the destruction of private property. Furthermore, I have reason to believe both individuals are implicated in financial fraud and the obstruction of a federal investigation."

Elena let out a sharp, incredulous breath. She pushed herself off the wall, her dark eyes flashing with a dangerous mix of betrayal and fury. "You cowardly bastard," she hissed, stepping directly into Sergeant Miller’s path before Julian could finish. "He’s lying, Officer! Julian is just as involved in the trust fund as we are. He signed the tax returns! He knew about the offshore accounts for years!"

Sergeant Miller held up a heavy hand, halting Elena in her tracks. He looked between the three of them, his expression hardened by years of dealing with wealthy families whose secrets were far uglier than their public facades.

"Ma'am, anything you say from this point forward will be used in a court of law," Sergeant Miller said, signaling to the second officer to move in with the handcuffs. "Right now, I need everyone in this hallway to remain completely still while we secure the premises."

Clara began to weep softly, her facade finally crumbling as the cold steel of the handcuffs clicked around her slender wrists. But as the second officer stepped toward Elena to cuff her as well, Elena’s phone—which had been sitting silently in her magenta dress pocket—began to ring with a private number, displaying a text message notification that lit up the entire corridor.
