Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Archive

Julian froze, his hand still pressed against Clara’s bleeding head, the silk handkerchief now soaked through. He slowly turned his head to look up at Elena, his expression shifting from blind panic to a cold, crushing realization. The silence in the elegant hallway became absolute, broken only by the distant, muffled strains of a string quartet playing a waltz on the terrace downstairs. Elena lowered the high-heel shoe an inch, her breath catching in her throat as the weight of Clara’s words settled over the checkered floor.
"What is she talking about, Elena?" Julian asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous, unfamiliar register. "What adoption papers?"
"She’s lying," Elena said, though the conviction in her tone had fractured, a microscopic tremor giving away the panic rising behind her dark eyes. She stepped back, her heel clicking sharply against a shard of broken glass. "Clara is a pathological liar. She has spent the last five years trying to tear this family apart piece by piece, and now that her financial embezzlement is about to be exposed, she invents a fairy tale to save herself."
Clara let out a low, wet chuckle that turned into a wince of pain. She shifted her weight on the hard marble, her sparkling gold dress catching the amber light of the wall sconces. "Tell him the truth about the orphanage in Providence, Elena. Tell him why my firm was auditing the Vanderbilt charitable trust last week. I didn't find out about the stolen funds by accident. I found them because I was looking for the file on your real brother—the one your parents abandoned so they could keep the entire estate intact."
Julian stood up slowly, towering over Elena in the dim corridor. The man who had rushed in to save a victim moments ago now looked like a stranger, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle twitched in his cheek.
"You knew about an adoption?" Julian demanded, taking a step toward his wife. "You told me your entire family died in the fire when you were ten. Every single detail of your past—was that a lie, too?"

Elena stared at her husband, the woman in red realizing the trap had finally snapped shut. But as Julian reached out to grab her arm, Clara’s phone began to vibrate violently inside her glittering evening bag on the floor.
