Chapter 11 - The Face Behind the Padded Walls

The elderly woman blinked slowly, her frail hands clutching the edge of the tattered wool quilt as if it were a shield against the light. She tilted her head, her milky-blue eyes searching Julian’s face with a profound, terrifying vacancy, as if she were trying to read a book written in a language she had forgotten how to speak.

"Julian?" she whispered, the name rattling in her throat like dry leaves. "No... no, Julian is a little boy. He wears sailor suits and runs through the rose garden when the sun goes down. You’re... you’re a grown man. You have his eyes, but your hands are too old."

Julian reached out, his fingers trembling as he brushed a stray lock of silver hair away from her sunken cheek. Her skin felt like dry parchment, ice-cold against his palm. "It’s me, Mom. I’m your son. I’m thirty-five years old. Arthur told me you died when I was five. He lied to all of us."

A soft, sorrowful smile touched the corners of the old woman’s pale lips. She didn't cry; she had clearly run out of tears decades ago. She raised a shaking, blue-veined hand and touched Julian’s tuxedo lapel, tracing the black silk edge of the bow tie.

"Arthur was always very good at making people disappear," she murmured, her voice barely audible over the hum of the ventilation shaft overhead. "He told me if I ever screamed, they would take you away to an orphanage where the winter winds never stop blowing. So I stayed. I sat in this room for ten thousand days, counting the floor tiles, waiting for the day my little boy would grow up and remember where the key was hidden."

Sergeant Miller lowered his service pistol, his face tight with a grim, professional fury. He turned toward the doorway of the vault, speaking urgently into his shoulder mic. "Control, this is Sergeant Miller. I’ve located the missing person in a secure subterranean vault beneath the estate. Requesting immediate medical transport and a forensic extraction team to the north wing. Repeat, we have a living victim."

From the dark corridor outside the vault, the sound of heavy footsteps echoed off the stone floor, followed by the sharp, metallic clinking of handcuffs and a familiar, desperate voice shouting down the stairs.

"You can't hold me here! I have diplomatic immunity! My lawyers are already filing an injunction!"

It was Arthur Vance.

Julian stood up slowly from the concrete floor, his eyes locking onto the dark doorway of the vault. The man who had orchestrated the nightmare, the man he had mourned at a fake funeral five years ago, was finally walking into the trap.
