Chapter 12 - The Architect of Lies

Arthur Vance stepped into the harsh beam of the flashlight, his tailored gray suit slightly rumpled, his silver hair slicked back with military precision. Despite the two state troopers gripping his arms, he carried himself with an arrogant, unyielding posture that radiated decades of absolute power and untouchable wealth. He didn't look like a fugitive cornered by the law; he looked like a CEO inspecting a hostile takeover.
Arthur’s sharp, cold eyes swept past the officers and landed directly on Julian standing beside the open vault door. A faint, condescending smirk touched the corners of his mouth.
"Well, look at you," Arthur said, his voice smooth, deep, and utterly devoid of paternal warmth. "All grown up, wearing a tuxedo you didn't earn, playing detective in the basement like a child who wandered into a room he shouldn't touch."
Julian didn't flinch. He didn't yell, and he didn't throw a punch. He walked out of the vault with a slow, deliberate stride, stopping just inches away from the man who had lied to him his entire life.
"You let me bury a stranger," Julian said, his voice shaking with a quiet, terrifying intensity. "You let me stand at a gravesite in the rain, crying over a wooden box filled with bricks, while you kept your own wife locked in a cage like an animal."
Arthur let out a dry, dismissive chuckle, pulling his arms slightly against the grip of the troopers. "Business requires collateral, Julian. Your mother was a liability. She couldn't handle the pressure of the Vanderbilt name, and she certainly couldn't keep her mouth shut about the foundation funds. If I hadn't put her down here, the federal government would have seized every asset we owned before you were old enough to spell your own last name."
"She was your wife," Julian whispered, the words tasting like ash in his mouth.
"She was an asset that depreciated," Arthur corrected coldly, locking eyes with his son without a single trace of remorse. "Just like Elena, and just like that little grifter Clara upstairs. You always had a weakness for women who wanted to use you, Julian. I built this empire from the dirt, and you nearly destroyed it because you couldn't keep your heart out of the ledger."
Sergeant Miller stepped between them, shoving Arthur back against the rough brick wall with a sharp thud. "Save the family therapy for the courtroom, Mr. Vance. You’re under arrest for kidnapping, financial fraud, and the unlawful imprisonment of a U.S. citizen."
Arthur didn't resist as the cuffs clicked onto his wrists. Instead, he tilted his head back and laughed—a harsh, echoing sound that bounced off the stone walls of the subterranean corridor.

"You think a pair of steel bracelets is going to stop what’s already in motion?" Arthur sneered, his eyes darting toward the ceiling as a low, ominous rumble vibrated through the foundation of the mansion above them. "Check the master server upstairs, Julian. The offshore accounts transferred thirty million dollars to a secure trust ten minutes ago. Even behind bars, I win."
