Chapter 1 - The Broken Heel and the Bleeding Crown

The sharp click of a heel hitting marble echoed through the grand Vanderbilt hallway. Elena stood frozen over the prostrate form of Clara, her chest heaving beneath the heavy silk of her magenta evening dress. In her right hand, she gripped the heavy, jeweled stiletto she had just used as a weapon, the satin of the shoe stained with a smear of dark crimson. On the black-and-white checkered floor below, Clara groaned, her blonde hair matted with blood where her head had struck the stone, the shimmering gold of her evening dress twisted awkwardly around her limbs. Julian burst from the arched doorway at the end of the hall, his tailored tuxedo jacket half-unbuttoned, his face pale under the warm glow of the wall sconces. He rushed forward, sliding slightly on a scatter of broken champagne glass, his eyes darting frantically between the two women.

"What in God's name have you done, Elena?" Julian breathed, dropping to his knees beside Clara.

"She brought this upon herself, Julian," Elena replied, her voice trembling with a cold, controlled fury that defied the violence of the moment. She did not drop the shoe; instead, she tightened her grip around the heel until her knuckles turned bone-white. "Ask her what she whispered to me by the balcony just ten minutes ago. Ask her whose life she systematically dismantled while smiling in our faces."

Julian pressed a silk handkerchief against the gash on Clara’s temple, his hands shaking as the white fabric immediately turned bright red. "This is insane. We call an ambulance right now. We don't execute justice with a designer shoe in the middle of a charity gala."

Clara stirred, her blue eyes flickering open with a glassy, disoriented stare. She reached out a trembling, manicured hand, her fingers brushing the lapel of Julian’s tuxedo. A weak, bitter smile crept onto her bruised lips, baring teeth stained faintly with wine.

"Don't bother with the ambulance, Julian," Clara whispered, her voice a dry rasp that seemed to pull all the oxygen out of the hallway. "She didn't just hit me because of the company funds. She hit me because I found the adoption papers from twenty-five years ago."

Elena’s face drained of every trace of color, the magenta dress suddenly looking like a pool of fresh blood against her skin.
