Chapter 9 - The Mentor's Shadow

The heavy oak door of Judge Harrison’s private study creaked open with a slow, ominous groan that seemed to mock the absolute silence of the grand estate. David stood on the threshold, his dark maroon sweater stained with sweat from the frantic drive across town, his knuckles white as he gripped the brass handle. Clara stood just behind him, her pink robe hidden beneath a heavy black wool coat she had grabbed on their way out of the nursery.
The room smelled of old leather, expensive scotch, and the unmistakable scent of intimidation. Behind a massive mahogany desk sat Judge Harrison, his silver hair neatly combed, his expression one of calm, grandfatherly disappointment as he looked up from a thick stack of manila folders.
"David," the judge said smoothly, setting his fountain pen down with a precise click. "I was wondering when you’d figure it out. Though I must admit, I expected you to handle Elena with a bit more discretion."
David stepped into the room, his boots clicking loudly against the Persian rug. He didn't bother with pleasantries.
"Where is my daughter, Judge?" David demanded, his voice trembling with a rage he could barely contain. "Where did your men take her?"
Judge Harrison sighed, leaning back in his leather chair and lacing his fingers together over his stomach. He looked less like a corrupt official and more like a university professor addressing a wayward student who had failed a basic exam.
"Your daughter is safe, David, which is more than I can say for your current living arrangements," Harrison replied, his tone patronizing and infuriatingly calm. "Elena was a loose cannon. She let her personal vendettas interfere with the parameters of the trust. A trust, I might remind you, that I personally oversaw the establishment of twenty years ago after the fire."
David’s breath hitched. "You... you were involved from the beginning? You helped Elena cover up the truth about the fire?"
"I saved you from the streets, David," Harrison corrected, his voice hardening just a fraction. "I gave you a name, an education, a brilliant law career, and a family estate. In exchange, all I asked for was absolute compliance when the time came to secure the lineage. Elena was meant to manage the physical transition of the bloodline. When she failed, I had to step in to protect the integrity of the estate."
Clara stepped past David, her face a mask of cold fury as she slammed her palms onto the mahogany desk, leaning in close to the older man.
"You don't own us, Harrison," Clara hissed, her voice vibrating with a lethal intensity. "And you certainly don't own my child."
Judge Harrison didn't blink. He slowly raised his gaze from Clara to the heavy iron safe built into the wall behind his desk, then smiled.

"On the contrary, my dear," Harrison whispered. "I hold the original birth certificates, the adoption waivers, and the signed confession that puts both of you away for conspiracy of fraud for the rest of your natural lives."
