Chapter 6 - Uninvited Guests

The heavy thud of boots pounding up the staircase rattled the walls of the nursery, sending a fresh wave of panic through the room. David dropped his hands from Clara’s shoulders, his head snapping toward the open doorway. The calm, sterile environment of the baby’s room was completely shattered, replaced by the acute danger of the unknown closing in from the hallway.

"Who is down there?" David demanded, his voice tight with adrenaline as he stepped protectively in front of the white crib.

Elena didn't answer. She was still sitting on the white carpet against the pastel green wall, her chest heaving as a manic, breathless laugh escaped her lips. The sound was shrill and grating, grating against the raw nerves of everyone in the room.

"It’s over, David," Elena wheezed, shaking her head as the dark strands of hair whipped across her pale face. "You wanted the truth? You’re about to get a front-row seat to the wreckage."

Before David could reach the doorway, a tall man in a dark trench coat filled the frame. His face was shadowed beneath the brim of a fedora, but the glint of a silver badge pinned to his lapel caught the dim nursery light. Behind him stood two uniform officers, their hands resting casually yet purposefully on the holsters at their hips.

"David Miller?" the lead detective asked, his voice gravelly and authoritative as his eyes swept the chaotic scene before him—Elena on the floor, Clara standing by the crib, and David holding a burner phone like a weapon.

"I'm Miller," David answered, his heart hammering against his ribs like a caged bird. "What is the meaning of this? Who called the police?"

The detective stepped further into the room, his boots leaving faint gray prints on the pristine white carpet. He pulled a folded document from his coat pocket and flicked it open with a practiced snap of his wrist.

"We received an anonymous tip regarding human trafficking, extortion, and the falsification of identity tied to this address," the detective stated, his cold gaze locking onto Elena. "Elena Vance, you're under arrest."

Elena didn't move. She didn't fight the officers as they stepped forward and hauled her up from the floor, her green silk wrap dress twisting awkwardly around her legs. She simply stared at David with an expression of pure, unadulterated venom.

"You think she’s the victim here, David?" Elena shouted as the cuffs clicked tightly around her wrists. "Ask her whose name is really on the birth certificate!"

The officers dragged Elena past the doorway, her voice fading down the hall. Silence crashed back into the nursery, heavy and suffocating. David turned slowly to face Clara, the burner phone slipping from his numb fingers and clattering onto the floor.

"Whose name?" David whispered, his voice trembling.

Clara picked up the phone from the carpet, her expression unreadable as she dialed a single number.

"Mine," Clara replied softly, just as the phone in David's pocket began to vibrate with an incoming call from an unknown number.
