Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Hallway

The sudden silence that followed David’s roar felt heavier than the screaming had moments before. Elena scrambled to her feet on the white carpet, brushing the non-existent dust from her green silk wrap dress with hands that refused to steady. Her dark eyes darted between David’s rigid back and Clara, who had pulled her pink robe tighter around her slight frame. The nursery, designed to be a sanctuary of pastel peace, now felt like a crime scene waiting to be investigated.
"David, listen to me," Elena urged, her voice dropping into a dangerous, calculated softness as she stepped cautiously around him. "You are letting your emotions cloud your judgment. Look at her. She hasn't slept in three days. She hallucinates things that aren't there."
David didn’t turn around. His fists remained balled at his sides, the dark maroon fabric of his sweater stretched tight across his broad shoulders. He kept his eyes locked on Clara, who was now rocking back and forth inside the white crib, her thumb pressed against her lower lip in a chillingly infantile gesture.
"She is my wife, Elena," David said, his voice terrifyingly quiet compared to the explosion of seconds ago. "And you broke into our house, bypassed the security codes, and cornered her like an animal. That isn't concern. That's control."
"I was protecting my investment," Elena snapped, stepping closer, her composure fracturing under the weight of his dismissal. "That child carries my blood, David. My sister's legacy. I have every right to ensure she isn't raised by a woman who doesn't even know what year it is."
Clara stopped rocking. She raised her head slowly, her dark eyes fixing on Elena with a clarity that completely contradicted the helpless routine she had been playing.
"I know exactly what year it is, Elena," Clara said, her voice smooth and devoid of the previous panic. "I also know what you did in Geneva three years ago."
The color drained entirely from Elena’s face. She froze mid-step, her sleek bun suddenly looking like a helmet of armor that had just been pierced. David turned his head slowly, his gaze shifting from Clara to Elena’s petrified expression. The air in the room grew instantly cold.
"What did she just say, Elena?" David asked, stepping away from the crib and blocking the doorway.
Elena swallowed hard, her tongue darting out to wet her dry lips. "She's delusional, David. You know she makes things up when she misses her medication. It’s part of the postpartum psychosis the doctors warned us about."

"Check your email, David," Clara whispered, pulling a burner smartphone from the deep pocket of her pink robe and tossing it onto the white mattress. "The password is your wedding anniversary."
