Chapter 5 - The Mirror Breaks

The words hung in the suffocating air of the nursery, refusing to settle. David stepped back, the burner phone slipping slightly in his sweating palm. He looked from Clara’s face down to the medical records he thought he knew by heart, his mind desperately trying to bridge an impossible canyon of logic.
"That's impossible," David breathed, shaking his head slowly as if trying to physically dislodge the thought. "You were the surrogate. You were vetted by three different agencies. Your medical history... your background..."
"Were entirely fabricated by the woman sitting on the floor," Clara finished for him, her voice terrifyingly steady. She stepped over the low wooden rail of the crib, her bare feet hitting the white carpet with a soft thud. She didn't look like a fragile, unstable patient anymore; she moved with the predatory grace of someone who had orchestrated every single variable in the room.
Elena remained crumpled against the pastel green wall, staring up at Clara with a mixture of pure hatred and deep-seated terror.
"You were supposed to take the money and disappear, Clara," Elena spat, her voice raspy as she tried to regain a fraction of her lost authority. "We had a contract. Six figures, a clean break, no looking back."
"Contracts require honesty, Elena," Clara replied, turning to look down at her former employer with a chilling smile. "And you and I both know that honesty was never your strong suit. You thought you could buy a womb and discard the woman attached to it like a used appliance. But you forgot one crucial detail."
"What detail?" David demanded, his voice rising as panic finally pierced his numbness. He grabbed Clara by the shoulders, his fingers biting into the silk of her pink robe. "What else don't I know? Who the hell are you, Clara?"
Clara didn't react to his rough grip. She simply raised her hand and rested it gently against David’s cheek, her thumb brushing away a stray tear he hadn't realized he was shedding.
"I am the sister you never knew existed, David," Clara whispered, her dark eyes reflecting the absolute destruction of his reality.

Before David could process the statement, the sound of heavy boots echoing up the wooden stairs shattered the silence, followed by the crash of the front door being kicked open downstairs.
