Chapter 3 - The Digital Ghost

David stared at the small black smartphone resting against the pristine white sheets of the crib like a venomous spider. The silence in the nursery stretched thin, broken only by the faint hum of the air conditioning unit on the wall. Elena took a sharp, desperate step toward the crib, her hand raised to snatch the device before David could process the threat.

"Don't touch it, David!" Elena hissed, her voice losing its polished edge and sliding into outright panic. "It’s a phishing scam. She’s hacked by someone trying to extort us. You know how vulnerable our company accounts are right now."

David didn't blink. He raised a single hand, signaling Elena to stop without ever taking his eyes off her. The absolute terror radiating from the woman in green was all the confirmation he needed. Slowly, deliberately, David reached down and picked up the burner phone. The screen flickered to life, illuminating his tense face in a harsh blue light.

"Anniversary," David muttered, his thumb tapping out the numbers of a date that now felt like a lifetime ago.

The screen unlocked instantly. A single video file sat in the inbox, labeled simply: The Geneva Protocol.

Clara watched him from the safety of the crib, her fingers tracing the carved wooden slats in a slow, rhythmic pattern. Her earlier vulnerability had vanished completely, replaced by a cold, calculating stillness that made her look like an entirely different person.

"You shouldn't have threatened to take the baby, Elena," Clara said softly, her voice carrying a terrifying calm. "Some doors are better left locked."

David’s finger hovered over the play button. His breath hitched in his chest as he glanced back at Elena. She had backed herself against the pastel green wall, her fingernails digging into the drywall as if she could phase right through it. The confident, ruthless businesswoman who had bullied her way into their home was gone, replaced by a trapped animal facing an executioner.

"David, please," Elena whispered, her voice cracking with genuine despair. "If you play that, nothing will ever be the same again. Not our family. Not your career. Nothing."

"You built this house of cards on lies, Elena," David said, his voice dropping to a gravelly register that left no room for negotiation. "Time to see how strong the foundation really is."

He pressed play. The screen flashed white, and the faint, unmistakable sound of a hospital monitor flatlining began to echo from the phone's tiny speaker.

Clara smiled faintly, leaning her head against the wooden rail.

"Watch closely," she murmured. "This is the moment your entire life was bought and paid for."
