Chapter 7: The Master’s Hands

Elena spent the next three months living in the modest timber cottage behind the mill.

She threw away her high-society wardrobe of silk dresses and delicate heels. She wore heavy denim overalls, wool sweaters, and thick leather work boots.

Every morning at five o’clock, while the mist still hung heavy over the river, Elena reported to the weaving floor.

Under Mateo’s patient, unhurried guidance, Elena re-learned the complex mathematics of the twelve-harness jacquard loom. She learned how to adjust the tension on the warp threads by ear, listening to the pitch of the wood as the foot treadles engaged. She learned how to boil natural dyes using walnut hulls, madder root, and wild marigolds gathered from the riverbanks.

Her smooth, manicured hands became blistered, then calloused, and finally nimble and strong.

At night, sitting by the stone fireplace in the cottage, she worked on restoring the heirloom shawl that Julian had desecrated.

With a fine brass needle and spun silk thread, Elena painstakingly repaired the frayed fringe and reinforced the ancient embroidered crest, stitch by deliberate stitch.

Every stitch was an act of severance and healing.

She stitched away the guilt of believing she had failed her marriage.

She stitched away the anger she felt toward the arrogant socialites who judged human worth by the price tag on a bag.

And with every pass of the needle, she felt the living presence of her grandmother sitting beside her, whispering the ancient truth of their ancestors: *A thread that is tested in the storm will never break in the sun.*
