Chapter 13: The Valley in Winter

Winter in the Berkshires arrived with a quiet, majestic stillness, blanketing the Westfield River in three feet of clean, white snow.

Inside the Castile Mill, the woodstoves roared warmly against the cold. The rhythmic *thud-clack* of thirty looms echoed through the four stories of the brick building, creating a comforting, continuous symphony of production.

Every afternoon, the large communal kitchen on the first floor was filled with the aroma of hot vegetable soups, fresh sourdough bread, and spiced apple cider.

Weavers, spinners, dyers, and apprentices gathered around the long maple tables, sharing meals, discussing weave structures, and laughing together as the snow fell softly outside the multi-paned windows.

Elena sat at the head of the table, wearing her favorite chunky grey wool sweater, helping a sixteen-year-old apprentice named Marco draft a double-weave pattern on graph paper.

""Always leave room for the warp to breathe, Marco,"" Elena explained, guiding his pencil. ""If the tension is too tight, the fabric becomes brittle. If it's too loose, the structure sags. Strength comes from balance, not force.""

Marco looked at the pattern, his face lighting up with understanding. ""Like a suspension bridge?""

May you like

""Exactly like a suspension bridge,"" Elena laughed, ruffling his hair.
