Chapter 4: The Boardroom Ambush

Forty-eight hours later, the thirty-second floor of the Vance Financial Tower in Manhattan felt like a war room under siege.
Julian sat at the head of the boardroom table, his eyes bloodshot, dark purple hollows bruising the skin beneath them. He had slept for three hours on a commercial flight from Newark, surrounded by economy passengers, his suit wrinkled, his ego shattered.
Sitting to his right was Richard Sterling—Lydia’s father, a ruthless private equity tycoon with silver hair and a mouth like a steel trap.
""You assured me the merger was locked, Julian,"" Sterling growled, slamming his Montblanc pen onto the mahogany wood. ""You told me your wife was a passive trustee who cared only for her charity galas. Now my daughter is trending on social media as an airport mistress, and your holding company has frozen our credit facilities!""
""It was an administrative mistake, Richard!"" Julian pleaded, raising his hands. ""Elena is emotional. She found out about Aspen and overreacted. Once her lawyers realize that separating our companies will trigger a thirty-million-dollar tax liability, she will come to the table.""
The double doors of the boardroom swung open.
Elena entered.
She wore a bespoke charcoal double-breasted suit, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, low bun, carrying a slim leather portfolio. She did not bring a security detail. She did not bring a crowd of associates. Behind her walked only Arthur Campbell, carrying two leather document binders.
The room fell into immediate, pin-drop silence.
Julian stood up instinctively. ""Elena—""
Elena did not look at him. She walked straight to the center of the table, took a seat directly opposite Richard Sterling, and gestured for Arthur to open the binders.

""Good morning, gentlemen,"" Elena said, her voice resonant and completely steady. ""Let us discuss the tax liability.""
