Chapter 2 - The Forged Signature

The silence that descended upon the sunlit living room felt heavier than physical weight. Evelyn’s arm slowly dropped to her side, her fingers curling into a tight fist against her black slacks. For a fraction of a second, the older woman’s stern mask slipped, revealing a flash of panic in her icy blue eyes before she swiftly locked her emotions back behind her impenetrable wall of discipline.

Clara watched that micro-expression with a surge of adrenaline that temporarily chased away her exhaustion. She lowered her gaze from her mother’s face to the entryway table, locking onto the exposed edge of the state adoption agency document. The truth was no longer a vague suspicion festering in the back of her mind; it was sitting right there in plain sight, tangible proof of a betrayal so deep it threatened to dismantle the very foundation of her existence.

“What is that?” Clara asked, her voice dropping to a dangerous, low whisper that commanded more attention than her previous scream. She took a deliberate step backward, putting distance between herself and the woman who had raised her.

Evelyn forced her posture to straighten, smoothing the front of her red shirt with agonizing slowness. Her jaw tightened, the muscle ticking beneath her skin. “It is none of your concern, Clara. You are in a fragile emotional state. You haven't been sleeping, and your postpartum anxiety is clouding your judgment. I am simply trying to manage the practical realities of our lives while you indulge in hysterics.”

“Practical realities?” Clara repeated, the words tasting like ash. Her heart hammered against her ribs, echoing in her ears like a drumbeat of war. She adjusted her grip on Maya, who stirred slightly in the pink blanket, letting out a soft, contented sigh that contrasted violently with the tension in the room. “You forged my signature on adoption paperwork, Mother. You tried to sell—no, give my child away behind my back while I was recovering from surgery.”

“I did what was necessary,” Evelyn snapped back, her voice rising in defensive volume as she stepped forward again. “You were drowning. That corporate job was your future, and this baby was an anchor dragging you down into poverty and regret. I paved a path for you to reclaim your dignity.”

“By stealing my daughter?” Clara’s voice shook, rage finally eclipsing her fear. She turned on her bare heel, clutching Maya, and bolted toward the hallway.

Evelyn lunged forward to intercept her, but as she reached out to grab Clara’s wrist, her foot caught on the edge of the cream rug, sending her sprawling hard against the hardwood floor with a sharp gasp.

Clara didn’t look back as she sprinted down the hallway, slamming the heavy wooden door of the master bedroom behind her and throwing the deadbolt. She slid down the door until she hit the floor, panting, clutching Maya to her chest.

From the other side of the heavy oak door, Evelyn’s muffled voice called out, cold and laced with a terrifying promise. “You can lock the door all you want, Clara, but you don't even know who your child’s father really is, and I hold the deed to this house.”
