Chapter 8 - The Decryption Error

The basement of Leo's house was cluttered with old computer parts, soldering irons, and half-empty cans of soda.
The twin monitors on his desk cast a harsh blue glow across his face as he stared intensely at the lines of code scrolling across the screen. Sofia sat beside him on an old leather stool, watching every movement of his fingers over the mechanical keyboard.
"Come on, open," Leo muttered under his breath, hitting the enter key for the fourth time.
The decryption script ran through a series of complex algorithms, attempting to stitch together the fragmented data packets they had managed to pull from the district server before Miller interrupted them.
A progress bar appeared on the left monitor, crawling slowly: 10%... 24%... 45%...
"Is it going to work?" Sofia asked, leaning closer, her breath fogging slightly in the chilly basement air.
"The encryption protocol the district uses is old, but it's stubborn," Leo replied, his eyes narrowed in concentration. "If the file was successfully cached before the firewall dropped the connection, we should have at least the audio track and the first two seconds of the strike."
Suddenly, the progress bar stopped dead at 82%.
A sharp warning sound chimed from the speakers, followed by a stark red dialog box popping up in the center of the screen.
CRITICAL ERROR: DATA CORRUPTION DETECTED. FILE HEADER MISSING.
Leo slammed his hand onto the edge of the desk in frustration. "Damn it! The file is locked behind a secondary checksum barrier. Without the master administrative key from Harrison's terminal, we can't unlock the rest of the stream."
Sofia stared at the frozen screen, her heart sinking. All that risk, the break-in, the confrontation with Miller—and they were blocked by a simple line of code.
"We didn't come away with nothing, though," Sofia said quietly, pointing to a small audio file icon sitting separately in the directory folder. "What's that?"
Leo blinked, noticing the detached audio track for the first time. He clicked it twice.
The tinny, compressed sound of Mrs. Gable's voice filled the basement speakers, crystal clear and chillingly distinct.
"Why didn't you let him copy your test?"
Then came the sound of Leo's chair scraping violently against the floor, followed by his angry shout: "Because he's your son! So we're supposed to let him cheat?"
And finally, cutting through the background noise of the classroom, a sound that made both of their blood run cold: the sharp, unmistakable crack of the wooden ruler hitting flesh, followed by Sofia's whimpered sob.
"It's not video," Sofia whispered, a shiver running down her spine, "but the audio is undeniable."

Before Leo could reply, the lights in the entire house flickered violently once, twice, and then plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
