Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

The classroom air grew dense, suffocating under the weight of institutional hypocrisy.

Mrs. Gable stood rigidly over Sofia, her dark blue business suit immaculate, her hair pulled back into a severe bun that accentuated the hard angles of her jaw. The wooden ruler in her grip felt less like an educational tool and more like an extension of her cold authority.

"Why didn't you let him copy your test?" Mrs. Gable demanded, her voice carrying a sharp, practiced edge meant to intimidate the fourteen-year-old Latina girl.

Sofia kept her gaze locked on her wooden desk, her fingers tightly gripping the edge of the polished oak. She could feel the stares of her classmates burning into her back, a mix of terror and awe.

Before Sofia could formulate a breathy, trembling defense, Leo erupted from his seat in the third row. His curly brown hair bounced with his violent movement, his gray hoodie twisting awkwardly over his blue shirt. He pointed a shaking finger directly at the teacher's face, his voice cracking with righteous fury.

"Because he's your son!" Leo shouted, his face flushing a deep, angry crimson. "So we're supposed to let him cheat?"

Murmurs rippled through the rows of desks. Mrs. Gable did not blink. She turned her icy stare toward the boy, her composure remaining terrifyingly intact despite the public insubordination.

"Sit down. Hand out," Mrs. Gable commanded coldly, her eyes shifting back down to Sofia, who had finally extended her trembling hand palm-up, tears welling in her dark eyes.

With a sickening crack, the wooden ruler came down hard across Sofia’s knuckles. A collective gasp echoed through the room as the girl choked back a sob, whispering, "I'm sorry!"

Leo watched the abuse unfold, his chest heaving with adrenaline. Without another word of warning, he bolted from his desk, sprinting violently toward the back corner of the classroom where the vintage analog security camera hummed quietly in its plastic casing. With a vicious wrench, Leo ripped the thick gray wire straight out of the drywall, plunging the room's surveillance feed into absolute blackness just as the heavy hallway door began to unlock.
