Chapter 7 - The Unseen Observer

The cool night air hit them like a physical wave as they burst through the heavy metal exit door behind the gymnasium, leaving the damp bowels of the administration building far behind.
Sofia leaned against the brick exterior wall, taking deep, shuddering breaths to steady her trembling limbs. Leo stood beside her, his fingers still tightly wrapped around the USB drive nestled safely in his hoodie pocket.
"That was way too close," Sofia whispered, looking up at him with a mix of fear and lingering awe. "How did you know Miller would back down like that?"
"I didn't," Leo admitted, running a hand through his curly brown hair. "I just gambled that the night shift custodian knows a lot more about what goes on in this school than he lets on. If the server logs were wiped at four-fifteen, Miller was probably the one who did it for Harrison."
Sofia looked down at her bandaged hand, the throbbing pain finally fading into a dull ache. "So we didn't get the file."
"Not yet," Leo said, pulling the small black drive out of his pocket and holding it up under the amber glow of the security light. "The transfer interrupted, but the cache might have downloaded a partial segment before it cut out. A few seconds of high-definition video might be all we need to force an independent investigation outside of district control."
Across the asphalt parking lot, parked near the perimeter fence, a sleek black sedan sat idling in the shadows. Its headlights were off, but the amber glow of a laptop screen illuminated the driver's face inside the cabin.
Neither Leo nor Sofia noticed the vehicle as they turned toward the sidewalk leading off campus.
Inside the sedan, Mr. Harrison lowered his phone from his ear, his expression dark and unreadable. He tapped the trackpad of his laptop, watching the live GPS coordinates of the USB drive's unique hardware signature ping across his screen as Leo walked away from the school grounds.
"Let them run," Harrison murmured softly to himself, typing a brief message into an encrypted chat window. "A cornered rat always runs straight into the trap."

The sleek sedan remained parked in the shadows, its engine humming quietly as it began to creep forward, following the two teenagers down the deserted suburban street without turning on its headlights.
