Chapter 5 - The Digital Ghost

The basement of the administration building smelled of damp concrete, ozone, and old paper.
Leo and Sofia moved quietly between towering racks of humming server towers, their footsteps muffled by the industrial rubber flooring. The keycard Marcus had stolen from the athletic director's locker room sat heavy and warm in Leo's pocket, having granted them silent passage through the rear maintenance stairwell twenty minutes ago.
"Are you sure about this, Leo?" Sofia whispered, her eyes darting nervously toward the blinking green and amber status lights flashing across the metallic server banks. "If we get caught down here, this isn't just detention. This is trespassing on county property."
"Marcus said rack four, sub-level B," Leo muttered, shining the beam of his smartphone flashlight onto the stenciled lettering of the metal cabinets. "The backup server for wing four classrooms should be right... here."
He stopped in front of a sleek, black rack bearing a faded sticker labeled DISTRICT INTRANET ARCHIVE - SECURE.
Sofia stepped up beside him, her left hand still wrapped in a clean white bandage she had applied after school. She pointed a trembling finger at the optical port on the front of the machine. "Can you pull the unedited session from today? The exact timestamp when she hit me?"
"I have to bypass the firewall first," Leo said, pulling a small USB thumb drive from his hoodie pocket—a tool his older computer-science major brother had left lying on their kitchen table.
He slid the drive into the front port. Lines of green command-line text immediately cascaded down the small LCD screen built into the server faceplate. A soft, rhythmic clicking sound echoed from inside the housing as the internal hard drives began to spin up, searching for the volatile memory cache from classroom 402.
"It's working," Leo breathed, a tense smile breaking across his face. "The local loop was severed, but the network buffer cached the stream for nearly forty seconds after you pulled the wire. I can download the whole uncompressed incident."
Before the progress bar could tick past twelve percent, a harsh, metallic clanging sound echoed from the heavy fire door at the far end of the basement corridor.
Heavy, purposeful footsteps struck the concrete floor, moving rapidly in their direction.
"Leo, someone's coming!" Sofia hissed, grabbing his sleeve and pulling him back into the shadows behind a towering stack of decommissioned printer boxes.

Leo frantically mashed the export button on the server interface, watching the transfer speed crawl agonizingly slow as the footsteps grew louder, accompanied by the distinct jingling of a ring of master keys.
