Chapter 9 - Darkness and Decibels

The sudden blackout plunged the porch into total darkness, cutting off the harsh glare of the SUV headlights as the house's main electrical breaker tripped with a loud, metallic snap. The autumn wind howled through the shattered living room window, carrying the sharp scent of ozone and impending rain.

"Hold your positions! Do not fire!" Thorne’s voice cut through the blackness, sharp and commanding, though underlying tension laced his words.

Elena didn't hesitate. In the pitch-black void, muscle memory and desperation guided her actions. She shoved Maya hard toward the heavy oak door, whispering fiercely, "Go, through the kitchen to the cellar, now!"

Maya stumbled, caught herself on the doorframe, and scrambled inside into the dark hallway, the sound of her running footsteps fading instantly into the interior depths of the house.

"She's moving!" the female agent shouted from somewhere near the steps, her boots scraping against the wooden boards.

A flashlight beam suddenly sliced through the darkness, blindingly bright, sweeping wildly across the porch. The beam caught Julian standing frozen near the railing, his hands raised instinctively in front of his face.

"Miller, secure the perimeter doors!" Thorne ordered, his voice echoing off the white wooden siding. "She's trying to purge the local drive!"

Elena pressed herself flat against the exterior wall beside the shattered window, her hand clutching the tiny SD card against the wooden clipboard. Her heart hammered so loudly in her ears that she feared the federal agents would hear it over the howling wind. She knew she had mere seconds before someone swept the porch with an infrared scope or turned on tactical night-vision gear.

Suddenly, a heavy hand grabbed her shoulder from behind, spinning her around with terrifying force.

Elena gasped, raising the clipboard like a club to strike out blindly in the dark.

"Quiet, it's me!" Julian’s desperate whisper hissed directly into her ear as his grip tightened on her arm.

Elena froze, her hand hovering inches from his face in the narrow cone of light bouncing off the siding. "Get away from me, Julian," she spat back quietly, trying to wrench her arm free. "You sold us out the moment your car pulled up to the driveway."

"I saved your life, you fool," Julian hissed back, his breathing ragged and panicked. He pressed a small, hard object into her palm, wrapping her fingers around it. "Thorne isn't here for a standard recovery. The committee issued a terminal directive twenty minutes ago. They aren't taking anyone into custody."

Elena’s fingers curled around the object Julian had given her—it felt like a brass skeleton key, cold and heavy. "What is this?" she whispered, her mind racing.

"The master key to the Pine Ridge fallout shelter beneath the old church," Julian replied rapidly, his voice trembling in the dark. "It's the only place on the grid that's shielded from their satellite tracking. Take the SD card, go down there, and wait for my signal."

Before Elena could process his words, a blinding white flare hissed to life near the edge of the lawn, illuminating the entire front yard in a harsh, ghostly glow.

Thorne stepped into the center of the illuminated porch, his silver hair shining under the magnesium flare, holding a thermal imaging scanner in his hand. He slowly turned his head, staring directly at the dark corner where Elena and Julian stood half-hidden by the shadow of the American flag.

"Found you," Thorne said softly, a cruel smile playing on his lips as he raised his service weapon and pointed it straight at Elena’s chest.
