Chapter 6 - The Digital Noose

The chilling realization of Miller’s trap hit Elena like a physical blow. She scrambled up from the rough floorboards, her dark wavy hair clinging to her damp forehead as she stared at the menacing smile on the agent's face. Julian remained frozen on his knees, the single damp page clutched in his trembling fist, his face completely devoid of color.
"You didn't just trace the upload," Elena said, her voice dropping to a harsh, accusing whisper. "You used the firewall bounce to locate Maya's personal tablet inside the house."
Miller didn't bother to deny it. He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted tracking device that was already blinking with a frantic, rhythmic red light. The device emitted a high-pitched electronic beep that synchronized perfectly with the heavy thuds of boots echoing from inside the hallway.
"Containment protocol is fully active," the female agent announced into her shoulder radio, keeping her pistol trained squarely on Elena. "Target secondary secured within the perimeter."
From inside the house, a muffled cry rang out, followed by the heavy sound of a door being forced open. Elena’s heart seized in her chest. All the leverage she had accumulated, every secret she had guarded for twenty years in Pine Ridge, instantly evaporated in the face of her daughter's capture.
"Leave her out of this!" Elena screamed, lunging toward the shattered window frame. "She's just a child! She doesn't know anything about the nineteen-nineties manifesto or the audit!"
Miller stepped directly into her path, blocking the window with his imposing frame. He looked down at her with absolute indifference, the epitome of a bureaucratic executioner. "Ignorance has never been an exemption under federal security directives, Mrs. Vance. Especially when collateral assets hold state secrets in their school backpacks."
Julian finally pushed himself up from the floor, his knees shaking slightly under the weight of his gray suit trousers. He shoved the damp paper into his breast pocket and glared at Miller with a mixture of disgust and sheer panic.
"This goes way beyond our jurisdiction, Miller," Julian snapped, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "We were authorized for asset recovery, not the abduction of a minor on domestic soil. If the committee finds out about this—"
"The committee won't find out anything, Director Vance," Miller interrupted smoothly, tapping the screen of his tracking device. "Because as of fourteen minutes ago, this entire suburban zip code has been placed under a federally mandated quarantine zone for biological contamination."
Elena stared at him in utter disbelief. "Quarantine? There's nothing biological here!"
"There will be, once the clean-up crew finishes sanitizing the perimeter," Miller replied with a terrifying calmness.
A heavy, metallic thud echoed from the driveway as the matte-black SUV’s rear doors swung open, revealing specialized hazardous-materials equipment loaded inside. Two additional operatives in full yellow containment gear began stepping out onto the gravel, unrolling heavy black plastic sheeting.
Julian’s face drained of what little color remained. He looked from the hazardous-materials team to Elena, then slowly reached down to adjust his tie, realizing he had just signed his own death warrant by playing this game.
"Elena," Julian muttered, stepping close enough for only her to hear. "When they bring Maya out, do exactly what I tell you, or we all burn."
Elena turned her head to look at him, her eyes burning with fury. "And why should I trust a single word you say, Julian?"
May you like
Before Julian could answer, the front door swung wide open, and Maya was pushed out onto the porch by the operative who had entered through the window.
