Chapter 10 - The Crosshairs

The magnesium flare hissed violently, casting an eerie, blinding white light across the porch and turning the falling autumn leaves into flickering shadows of grey and ash. Thorne stood at the center of the warped floorboards, his service pistol locked dead-center on Elena’s chest. The thermal imaging scanner in his left hand glowed with a faint, pulsing emerald light, confirming every heartbeat within a ten-foot radius.
"It's over, Mrs. Vance," Thorne said, his voice terrifyingly calm against the backdrop of the crackling flare. "Put the clipboard down, open your left hand, and step away from the wall."
Elena didn't move. She stood her ground, her dark trench coat fluttering in the wind, her fingers tightly clutching the tiny SD card and the brass skeleton key Julian had shoved into her palm. She could feel Julian trembling beside her in the shadows, his breathing shallow and erratic.
"You're too late, Thorne," Elena said, her voice steady and echoing clearly across the yard. "The data packet was already routed off-site three minutes before your tactical team shattered my living room window."
Thorne’s smile didn't waver, but his eyes hardened into chips of ice. He took a slow, deliberate step forward, the heel of his shoe clicking against the splintered wood. "A clever bluff, Elena. But our deep-packet inspectors confirmed that your daughter's tablet was disconnected from the network the moment the local router lost power. The data never left Pine Ridge."
Elena’s stomach plummeted. She had calculated the sync timing down to the second, forgetting that the local substation was tied directly into the federal grid’s fail-safe kill switch. She had the physical SD card, but without the decryption key stored on the server mainframe, the card was nothing more than a useless piece of plastic.
"You're trapping yourself in a conspiracy you can't survive, Thorne," Julian interjected, stepping slightly forward to put himself half in front of Elena. "If you execute us here, the fallout will trace directly back to your desk. The oversight committee isn't as blind as you think."
"The oversight committee signed the termination order this morning, Julian," Thorne replied smoothly, never breaking eye contact with Elena. "You really should read your departmental memos before playing the hero."
Miller and the female agent moved in from the flanks, closing the escape route toward the shattered window. The armed operatives at the edge of the lawn raised their rifles, their laser sights painting small, menacing red dots across Elena’s coat.
Elena looked down at the brass key in her palm, realizing that Julian’s frantic gamble was her only remaining option. She had to reach the fallout shelter beneath the old church before the tactical team realized where the fallout tunnels led.
"Julian," Elena whispered under her breath, her eyes darting toward the edge of the roofline where a thick ivy vine hung down toward the side yard. "On three."
Julian gave an imperceptible nod, his hand slipping toward his shoulder holster.
"Three," Elena muttered, and suddenly threw the wooden clipboard directly at Thorne’s face with all her might.
May you like
Thorne dodged instinctively as the wooden board clipped his shoulder, spinning out into the yard. In that split second of chaos, Elena dove sideways off the porch railing, plunging headfirst into the dense bushes below just as a deafening volley of gunfire shattered the autumn air.
