Chapter 13 - The Hand on the Bulkhead

The heavy steel door jammed violently against a gloved hand, stopping Elena's desperate attempt to seal herself inside the fallout shelter. Her heart stopped as a familiar, breathless voice cut through the damp subterranean air from the top of the stairwell.

"Wait! Don't lock it! It's me!" Julian’s voice echoed down the stone steps, strained and ragged.

Elena froze, her hand gripping the cold steel handle of the bulkhead. She flashed her penlight upward, revealing Julian staggering down the spiral staircase, his gray suit jacket torn, his tie loosened, and blood dripping slowly from a cut above his right eyebrow. Behind him, the faint sounds of tactical boots clattering onto the church floor grew dangerously close.

"Julian?" Elena whispered in disbelief, her eyes narrowing with suspicion. "How did you get away from Thorne? You were standing right beside him when the doors blew."

Julian reached the bottom of the stairs, leaning heavily against the concrete wall to catch his breath. He held up a shattered communicator piece with a grimace. "Thorne isn't taking prisoners, Elena. The moment I tried to stall the breach, he ordered Miller to put a bullet in my back. I barely made it through the vestry window before they leveled the nave."

Elena studied his face, looking for the micro-expressions of deception she had learned to spot over two decades of political survival. His breathing was fast and shallow, his pupils dilated with genuine terror. There was no act here; Julian was as much a hunted animal as she was.

"If you're lying to me, Julian, I will lock this bulkhead and let Thorne find you," Elena warned, stepping back to allow him to stumble through the heavy steel doorway into the control room.

Julian fell against a control console, groaning as he wiped blood from his forehead. "I'm not lying. Look at the main monitor console."

Elena turned her penlight toward the flickering green glow of the CRT screens. To her astonishment, the analog mainframes were booting up automatically, processing the tiny SD card she had slipped into the primary terminal slot the second she entered the room.

Lines of classified text scrolled rapidly across the vintage monitors—names, dates, financial routing codes, and satellite coordinates detailing the exact nature of the nineteen-nineties Pine Ridge cover-up. It was the entire historical archive that the agency had spent twenty years trying to erase from existence.

"It's working," Julian breathed in awe, watching the data stream flood the local closed-circuit network. "The automated proxy is bouncing the files straight to independent international servers. By sunrise, every major news outlet on the planet will have the complete Pine Ridge cipher."

Suddenly, a loud, metallic banging echoed against the exterior bulkhead door from the stairwell. Thorne’s voice boomed down through the concrete tube, cold and amplified through a tactical megaphone.
